Extortionist tries to bleed David Letterman to the tune of $2 million

I’m smiling now, earlier today? Not so much …
David Letterman will discuss on tonight’s show that an unidentified man attempted to extort $ 2 million from him and if he didn’t give it up, the man would reveal delicate details of Letterman’s sexual escapades with show staffers, reports Nikki Finke on her blog Deadline Hollywood.
UPDATE 10:53pm: TMZ has learned the identity of the alleged extortionist who was arrested today. RobertHalderman, 51, of Norwalk, Conn. Halderman has a business in Manhatten, where he was arrested today.
DRAMA!!!
Three weeks ago, Letterman said “he received a package from an individual who claimed to have information about Letterman’s alleged sexual relationships with female employees of the Late Show and threatened to reveal them if Letterman did not pay the individual a large sum of money,” according to a CBS statement sent to Finke.
Subsequently, according to Letterman, the individual identified the necessary sum to be $2 million,” Finke writes in her blog.
Letterman turned to the Special Prosecution Bureau of the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, who investigated the matter, the late night talk show host says in tonight’s show. The saga ended today after a fake $2 million dollar check was issued to the unknown extortionist, who was arrested for his misdeeds. Name unknown at this time.
Letterman said testified in front of a Grand Jury today and “he acknowledged sexual relationships with members of his staff,” Deadline Hollywood reports.
“My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would,” Letterman said. “I feel like I need to protect these people – I need to certainly protect my family.”
Stay tuned.
