Wesley Snipes Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Failing to File Tax Returns

Wesley Snipes received the maximum sentencing in his tax evasion case, he’ll have to spend the next three years behind bars. He’ll also have to pay a $5 million fine.

The sentence was recommended by the prosecution in hopes of sending a message to other scofflaws.

“The law is very clear: People must pay their taxes,” Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Douglas Shulman said. “There is no secret formula that eliminates a person’s tax obligations.”

 

Wesley was convicted on three misdemeanor counts of failing to file his Federal returns. It was his contention that he was misled by bad advisors. Originally he had also been charged with conspiracy but those charges were dropped.

“The fact that Snipes was acquitted on two felony charges and convicted ‘only’ on three misdemeanor counts has been portrayed in the mainstream media as a ‘victory’ for Snipes,” the government document says.

“The troubling implication of such coverage for the millions of average citizens who are aware of this case is that the rich and famous Wesley Snipes has ‘gotten away with it.’ In the end, the criminal conduct of Snipes must not be seen in such a light.”

It was also disclosed Wesley’s been shipping his money to Swiss accounts as well as banks in Antigua to avoid paying his taxes.

In addition to the prison term and fine, the government is also seeking repayment of millions of dollars in taxes.

Better hold on tight to that soap, Wesley. Wouldn’t want you to drop it in the shower or anything.
