PDXFOODDUDE has the most sensible take on the subject..and I pretty much agree with everything he had to say...As a server I am proud to say that I believe that I am an above average server 95% of the time yes I can occasionally "Get in the Weeds" and my service is not what I would like it to be and I understand when my tip might not be as high as normally expected..I take it like a woman and go on..But when I am on game and give excellent service and receive $4 on a $100 yes I turn into one of those whinny complainers that some of you like to vent about...But let me throw this out If you go to lets say, your auto mechanic and get a new set of tires and you decide that they were too slow at putting them on and getting you back on the road or maybe you go to the family doctor and decide your wait is too slow and you decide that you are just going to pay these professionals just 10% or so of their bills because you think thats all they deserve...hmmm well that just wouldnt go over at all would it?!!So why do people think it is acceptable to do that to their servers IF they provide you with the excellent you are expecting???....As for the celebrities that is not the majority of clientel at most establishments so its really not of importance to most of us servers...To all my fellow servers remember the good does come with the bad and to keep your head up because that next table will probaly make up for that demanding 10 top that tipped you 5% on a 300 dollar bill!!!

Here's an idea - do what we used to do when the "big players" used to try and come into our restaurant after several other places and accounts had reported that they refuse to tip at all (even crossing out the added gratuity for large parties right off the bill, taking up the entire dining room, and not tipping eeh staff who worked only for them all night long).

REFUSE TO SERVE THEM.

The "superstar" execs from the big company that constantly did this to servers found that they no longer had a place to throw lavish dinner parties because every restaurant in town black balled them. And they were quite vocal about why.

I don't care who you are...but if you don't want to pay for service, then you won't get service.

I heard a story from a friend in New York about Streisand. She lived in an apartment building next to a restaurant. She was having some friends over and called the restaurant to order some food. They were closing but decided to oblige her and had a waiter bring some food up to her apartment. She tipped the guy $50 in front of the guests. After the guests left she called the restaurant and asked for the waiter who brought up the food. They said he'd gone home. She wanted the $50 back. So all those stories about her being cheap ... true.

and defnitely not all rich people are snobbs and cheap. I drove a wealthy guy and his wife from a hotel to an airport, which is about 20 miles away and he gave me a 50 dollar tip. He was a nice and friendly guy too. So as I said. In the service industry, you have to take the good and the bad.

Unfortunately, in our line of work, we have to take the good with the bad. Sometimes, you get the greatful people who understand that in the service and hospitality industry, we LIVE off of our tips. They understand that if it wasn't for us, they would be driiving/serving themselves everywhere they go. Then you get the pathetic people that think that we need "real jobs" but if we don't serve on them hand and foot, and give them everything on a silver platter, they complain and throw a tantrum like a 2-year old. These are the type of people that no matter what you do for them, they will never be happy. They think they are a god and don't deserve what they have.

BAD TIPPERS SHOULD GO STRAIGHT TO HELL.

We make NO money per hour, I'm a college student barely scraping by, and the pathetic 2 an hour that I get goes STRAIGHT to taxes. I might get a paycheck with 3 dollars on it. We deserve, rely, and NEED our 15% at LEAST!

I dont think anyone here is saying to leave a tip if you get
bad service of course why would you tip bad service. I know
many people that have given great service busted their back
for people and didn't get a dime thats what i am talking about..
I have witnessed that from friends/ family that have worked in the food buisness..I guess people that think opposite here have
proubly never had to work in food service so they dont know..

One thing i have noticed about some of these celebrities
that tip so poorly and are rude most of them are very liberal
and political acting like they are for the party of the poor
yet they are the ones that tip so little in public...Sean Penn
Jessie Jackson..Bill Cosby..Micheal Moore just to name a few..
that have been known to leave almost nothing kind of hypocritical one would think..I know the rich dont owe people
anything Francesca but these people preach their opinions
to average people but yet dont live the way they portray to..

I hate the whole idea that the rich owe you. what pathetic extortion. A fifth of the bill is so ridiculous to just expect as a tip, anyway.
