You’d think with all their money, celebrities would be good tippers. This isn’t always the case. Certain celebrities are notoriously bad tippers. Check it out:
- Madonna - Doesn’t always leave a tip, when she does it’s a cheap one.
- Kelly Presten – Notoriously bad tipper. Most of the time she doesn’t leave a tip at all.
- Gwyneth Paltrow – Doesn’t leave a decent tip. It’s speculated she has trouble calculating the proper percentage.
- Barbra Streisand – Doesn’t always tip. When she does it’s $10 for a bill of over $450. She’s very high maintenance and demanding and no one ever wants to wait on her.
- Tobey Maguire – Doesn’t always leave a tip, and when he does it isn’t generous.
- Bill Cosby – Once left a $3 tip on a $350 order. He probably thinks the waitstaff needs to stop taking from others and get a real job.
- Ricki Lake – Once left a tip of $8.00 on a $142.44 bill. This after she let her young son run around the restaurant unattended – and he supposedly made a big mess.
- Bobby Brown – Rude to wait staff, lets his kids run amuk and left a $10 gratuity on a $250 restaurant tab.
- Sean Penn - He and three others had New Orleans waiters waiting on them hand and foot. The tip left on a $450 tab? Absolutely nothing. There are lots of instances of Sean Penn stiffing waitstaff. How many people do you think have spit in his food by now?
- Kirsten Dunst – According to one server she’s whiny and smells bad. Left nothing behind after racking up a $223 bill.
- Dan Marino – Wouldn’t talk to server directly, had to have a member of his entourage handle it. Tipped $10 on $210.
- David Lee Roth – Is known to be demanding and send food back. Tips 10%.
- Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman – He and his wife are considered to be very high maintenance. They expect the VIP treatment and only tip %5. At a TGI Fridays in Waikiki they paid $10 for a $250 tab.
- Rupert Everett – Listed as one of the worst tippers ever.
- David Byrne – The Talking Heads frontman is considered one of the worst tippers ever because he doesn’t leave anything, ever.
- Molly Ringwald – Bar tab was the equivalent of twenty-five cents for each round of drinks her large entourage consumed.
- Diddy – Left a $40 tip for his meal – a dinner for 15 people.
- Richard Dreyfuss – Bad tipper and high maintenance “whiny” client.
- Michael Moore – Once left less than $20 on a bill totally $452.52.
- Jesse Jackson – Left $20 on a $228 tab.
- John Kerry – Left $20 on a tab of over $700!
- Britney Spears – Once tipped a valet by dropping change on the ground and telling him “there’s your tip”. Also paid a $26 tip on a $500 tab.
- Tiger Woods – Doesn’t tip because he says he doesn’t carry cash.
- Usher - Never tips and always tries to get someone else to pick up the bill.
- Rachel Ray – Tipped $1 on a $10 tab. Probably didn’t want to go under her $40 a day allowance.
- Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes – Dined together in an upscale restaurant and didn’t leave a tip.
- Tom Green – Once left $15 on a $175 tab.
- Paul McCartney – Once left a restaurant too drunk to leave a tip.
- Regis – Once left cruise staff a $60 tip for an entire week’s worth of personal service. His wife is said to be very high maintenance and the ship’s crew was happy when she left two days early.
- Marty Stuart – Leaves 7% – his wife is very demanding.
- Don Henley – Very demanding, keeps staff members on their toes, tips 15%.
- D’Angelo – Once left $7.00 on a $250 tab. The tab should have been over $500, mind you, but the r&b singer and his entourage nagged until they got a discount.
- Mariah Carey – Once had her people call ahead to a restaurant to let them know she was arriving with a very large party. The restaurant stayed open late, and Mariah and crew were very diva-ish with their demands. Despite keeping staffers jumping and a high tab, no one left a tip.
- Marion Jones – Left $3 on a $45 tab.

Hmmm… I will look at these names and remember them. I won’t pay to see their movies or to listen to their music. When I do it is basically a tip since you can get all that stuff for free anyway. What comes around goes around.
Right, because you have heard one story from each of them I’m sure you know their tipping patterns. Maybe the TGI Fridays that you and your friends work at are lousy at what you do so you dont get tipped well
proof?
and where is the proof? this list could be made up speculation.
Most restaurants charge an automatic 15% gratuity on large orders and or parties. The more posh the establishment, the more likely they do autograt.
In the EU 10% is the norm. Which is exactly what some of these allegedly gave. Some sources would have been nice.
Granted, because they have made a large fortune off of a reputation, they should be a little more generous and try to give back. This whining about tips is getting old. Maybe they didn’t like the service. And If they are being charged ridiculous prices for meals, percentages shouldn’t apply. 10% used to be acceptable and now it makes the list of bad tippers? Businesses pay you less while you complain about the consumers not making it up in tips. Only in America do people complain about not getting hand-outs while the large business reaps the benefits.
Proof or it never happened!
How about a list now of the big tippers?
you auto-grat me, you aren’t getting another cent
you don’t auto-grat me, you’re probably getting 25%
@candyaddict – It’s in the works…
The Dog spent $250 at a TGI Friday’s. WTF? Who does that?
In North Carolina as a professional waiter that makes $2.40 an hour I would like to explain why tip percentage has gone up. Cost of living and minimum wage increases have never made my wage go up in the ten years I have been waiting tables, but it has been reduced twice. I work in a 4.5 star environment and we never autograt at dinner. The reason I make 20 percent (at least) is because I earn the tip. I am not owed anything. AutoGrat is somewhat the norm on large parties and alot of people assumed the grat is added if you got a zero tip. I get to proudly tell large parties that we never add gratuity we earn it. TGI fridays give me a break
the standard tip has now gone up to 15%, and that if the server just gets your order right and brings you refills on your beverage. Plus if you have never served or been involved with the food industry i dont think you should even be allowed in a resturant. that would solve alot of the cheapoes.
Here’s a few more.
I worked in an A.C. Casino for 15 years. Ben Affleck was playing poker and winning big while J-Lo hovered nearby demanding drinks (stiffing the waitress) and playing Diva. Ben won a little over $10,000 and at the end of his play, he threw the dealer a $500. tip. J-Lo jumped in, took it back and threw two $25 cheques back to the dealer. It wasn’t even her money and she was being stingy with it. Thank God Ben divorced that cheap whore.
Dennis Rodman is another stiff. The dealer on a craps game gave change back to Rodman that included a white $1 cheque. Rodman cursed at the dealer and threw the cheque away in ignorant fashion like he was too good to take a dollar cheque. Unfortunately, in doing so, he hit some old lady in the head with the cheque. When she saw the orange-green hair and realized who he was, she started makikng a big fuss over how “hurt ” she was. Dennis threw the bitch a $100 cheque and told her to go the F*** away which she promptly did. She got her reward for bad acting and couldn’t run to the cage fast enough to cash in.
The dealers got nothing.
Roger King got a Host fired because he couldn’t find a couple decent Atlantic City Hookers to pleasure him. (Really, there’s no such thing!) The host threatened to go to the DGE (Div. of Gaming Enforcement) and complain. The host was hired back and paid for all his lost hours, AFTER King went home. Can’t go against the favored clientelle, at least not to their fat f***ing face.
\Gene Hart, the “Voice of the Philadelphia Flyers”, before he passed away was loud obnoxius and never never never EVER tipped. Good riddance I say.
When you are spending big, you can’t expect tips to be in the regular 15-20% range. A server doesn’t deserve 20% on a $300 bottle of wine, because they are doing the same work as a $30 bottle. Tipping should be relative to work done, not cost of meal.
Tipping is not a compulsary thing. Be thankfull they do tip when they do.
BTW i work in a high level food establishment in London. A few of the people above visit. If they tip fair enough, its not the end of the world if they dont.
It’s all well and good to say that the T(o)I(nsure)P(omptnous) should be on work performed, but we pay TAXES on a percentage of the bill, whether there is a TIP or not. When restaurants begin paying their staff a proper wage, and not expect the customer to subsidise the staff’s wages, then maybe servers will reduce the airing of grievences. It’s always the rich pukes that demand everything for nothing. I used to work in the service industry, and I always TIP at least 20%, if the service is good. I really hate auto-tip on up to a 6-top.
You can’t keep Don Henley on the list. 15% is customary. 20% is better, but, only if they did a really good job. Anything else is gravy. Anything less is crap. But, if someone is giving 15%, you can’t say he/she is a bad tipper.
Some establishments, staff and service get the tips they deserve..period. I love to see them choke on crappy tips.,
Especially when the tip reflects the food or service, not to mention the personal hygene of the wait staff.
I guess I must be crazy, if all these people with money tip so bad. My tips start at 20% and can go up or down based on service.
and whats wrong with 15 percent?,(henley)
thats no where near a bad tip!!
michael….why doesnt your owner pay for your work. then tips are not expected. ..if your making 2.40 an hour, your owner is getting over. I know you dont claim all that tip money either….
[...] 34 Notoriously Bad Celebrity Tippers [...]
In many cases the server has to tip out 3-5% to various people including bussers, food runners, bartenders etc…..so if they have a table with a $200 check, they are losing $10 right off the bat. if the table only leaves a $10 tip then that server does all of that work for nothing. this is why percentage is important sometimes
I agree tips should be based on service, but it also has to reflect the total sales otherwise the server is tipping out the house to serve your table – which is not cool. Just because they’re celebrities shouldn’t mean they should tip more or less than the recommended 15-20%, servers shouldn’t expect more either just because the person is rich.
tips should always be based on service, yes 15% of the bill is the norm for GOOD service, not mediocre service and certainly not bad service, just because someone is rich does not mean that they should have to tip someone who isn’t doing their job properly. that said i have been a waitress for 10 years and it is true that waiters and waitresses do not make what other people make because it is expected that it should be made up by the tips, we automatically pay tax on 15% more than our earnings because that is what we ar expected to take home in tips ( granted that is where i live i can’t speak for worldwide) so basically waiters are expected to go above and beyond the call of duty to make enough money so that they are not losing in taxes. if your service is bad, than don’t tip well it is your right rich or poor but if your service is good if the waitress did his or her job, tip 15%. don’t expect a waiter or waitress to go above and beyond their call of duty to earn their tip ( which will bring them up to minimum wage) when you don’t expect other working people to go above and beyond their call of duty to earn minimum wage it isn’t fair. and fyi if a wait staff gives exceptionally poor service it is well known ( atleast here) that instead of stiffing them you can leave a small tip along with a single one cent coin, that is how you let them know their service was terrible.
Frequently in higher dining when given a “celebrity table” the managers will force you to forgo the remainder of your section to other staff members encouraging you to give exceptional service to your “celebrity table”. Celebrities tend to be extremely demanding and expect to be waited on hand in foot. It is absolutely absurd to expect the level of service that many of them require and even believe that 20% is an acceptable tip. I have personally catered to Bob Dylan and crew, Anna Nicole Smith and crew, Many Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as many Washington Redskins, in addition to many political figures while working in Alexandria, VA. If you can afford a $300 bottle of wine you can afford a $60 tip. I have also studied wine extensively and am able to recommend bottles at any price, therefore I have done the work to earn that $60 tip, not the same amount of work for a $30 bottle. Selling wine involves more than removing a cork. Ag you are most likely as cultured as my doormat. Anna Nicole Smith required crab legs to be cracked table side (which was not customary at that particular restaurant) 2 of my coworkers and I cracked over 25 lbs for her to eat and were left a 10% tip. Dylan’s story is too long and depressing to tell. Most Redskins and Steelers tipped well. My service is fantastic 95% of the time and I have been the lead server everywhere I’ve ever worked. If I am being forced to give up my section for you, my service is better than anyone on this list has received, and I deserve to be paid accordingly. If you are that important, tip like you are. Lord Matt we are not in the EU, and you are not paid the same wage as us. Your people need to learn how to tip as well when in America, no one worse than a snobby European.
I’m British and have never understood why Americans accept that it’s okay for restaurants to pay wait staff crappy wages on the ‘understanding’ that customers make up the difference. Would it be okay for the restaurant manager or the chef to depend only on tips? I mean, which other industry does that? Why don’t you fight for decent wages, so that any tips are a bonus, not an expectation? My husband and I eat out maybe once every two months or so and tip between 10 and 15%. When we eat out, it’s a treat to ourselves, not us thinking ‘Let’s go out and supplement someone else’s wages, with OUR hard earned (un-tipped) wages.’ When your food bill is already quite sizeable, I resent an EXPECTATION to pay extra for someone doing a job they’ve chosen to do.
We were once followed out of a Miami restaurant by a waiter who said we hadn’t tipped enough and who actually stood there while we (in shock) patted down our pockets looking for extra change for him.
It sucks from the server end. I think the restaurant employer should pay the celebrity tip to his server if they get stiffed. Hey, they want the celebrity to keep coming back cuz it great advertising and word of mouth. At least keep your staff happy alone the way. But it’s still wrong that they don’t tip properly.
most of the people on here are either a holes, white trash (ex) britney spears, or minorities explains alot
Tipper is not mandatory. Any waiter who always expects a tip should get a different job. Can you reasonable expect a 15 percent tip on $700? That’s greedy. Waiters should shut up and serve.
[...] by a reader, the website Glamorati also has a list of notoriously bad celebrity tippers…for curious [...]
Aqua, welcome to America, you moron. We ARE taking a stand and fighting by conversing on websites like this that bring people’s inconsiderate natures to light. It isn’t the managers’ decision to pay servers so little any more than it is the servers’ decision to autograph a check. It’s the businesses’. If you have the money to eat out, BRING THE MONEY TO TIP. Can’t afford it or just don’t want to pay? Fine. Make a visit to your local grocery store instead. Don’t expect me to empathize with rich clientele who don’t tip – “just because they’re famous doesn’t mean they have to tip more…” Yes, it very much does. If they can buy foreign cars and designer gowns and Dolce & Gabbana purses they only use once, they can leave a substantial tip to help put food in the servers’ (and their children’s) mouths. As for Britney Spears, no one does that unless there was crappy service. She obviously was very displeased with someone’s service and made him/her pay for it. I would do the same and dare someone to say something smart to me about it. As for Carrie and Chad, you two are my heroes.
AG, i understand what you are saying about the bottle of wine, but A) if you are spending $300 on a bottle of wine, you can afford to tip on it, B) if you don’t tip on it, we lose money, on that bottle of wine I would have to tip the bartenders $12!!! and the bussers $5, so right there I am out $17 on your stupid bottle of wine, thats how restaurants work, and I’m sure the clientele that orders stuff like that isn’t going to be a working class guy, it’s going to be some rich a-hole that can afford it! stop making excuses not to tip, it’s rude!! and people remember that, all good tippers go to heaven.
Amar’e Stoudemire left me nothing on a 150 dollar tab when I was waitressing.
Wow has America really come to the point were we write on a forum how unhappy we are. If you are that unhappy and that displeased about how things are, get the hell out. If you would spend less time on here bitc$ing and more time working you would probably make more money. I’m not the smartest guy in the world but if you’re having “a hard time putting food on the table for your family” why do you have the internet. That is money you could use to put food on the table. My point is being thankful for what you have. If you’re a server, great I tip well when the service is good. But why are you complaining, its part of the restaurant business. If you don’t like your job, get a new one. What a concept. If you can’t put food on the table for your families, you probably shouldn’t be spending $40 a month for internet. If you don’t like the way things are, leave the US and go somewhere else, so the rest of us don’t have to listen to you.
I work in a major Las Vegas casino. There’s no set tip that a player should give a dealer. It’s always been that if you win you share what you believe to be a showing of your appreciation to that dealer. People who “stiff” me and then have the nerve to ask me what my opinion is on their hand get “I don’t know” Of course I know. I know the best strategy to better a persons hand but can you imagine that this player wants my knowledge so as to make him money and then he isn’t going to show me appreciation by tipping me. User, user, user. You’re not going to get anything but cards from me. How do I know you’re stiff? There are plenty of cues and too many to go into here. You’ve ordered your free, complimentary drinks from the cocktail waitress and given her 50 cents or nothing. That pretty well shows me what I’m going to get from you. Players are so stupid that hopefully I can short them in their payoffs which I do deliberately and figure there’s my tip I didn’t get and it’s usually far more than the tip they could have gotten away with if they hadn’t been so cheap. Can you honestly believe those coctail servers don’t spit in your drinks? Oh please, we all have our ways. I’m regularly a tourist to all spots on the globe. Before I go I read up on the customs and proper manners in the country I am visiting. There is no excuse for coming to the USA as a tourist and not doing what is expected in this country. We in the service industry more than like receive less than minimum wage and yes our income primarily comes from tips. This is America. This is what we do here. When I travel to your country I’ll make sure that I understand how to behave and I wish you would do the same. Don’t give me the line “we don’t tip where I come from.” Well you’re not there you’re here and in America we tip where appropriate. Believe me if you sit down at my table and you’ve got an accent more than likely I already know you’re going to stiff me so please don’t ask me my advice as to what you should do with your hand or any advice I might have to make your stay more enjoyable. There are plenty of Americans who a stiffs as well. And the actors and super stars are especially bad because they have so much and require so much and are 99% stiff. These people are the worst. As if their presence should be thanks enough for us. The only actor I ever dealt to that was gracious, generous. friendly and a class act was Robert Wagner. Diana Ross tells players at the table not to tip us, why should she begrudge us our living? I could write a book!
As a fine food server in Las Vegas for 20 years i made a pretty good living , raised two kids and paid for a home .But it wasnt because of my wages. If a party of 6 or more come in and expects excellent service they should expect to leave a good tip of at least 18%. Thank goodness most houses tac a 18% on for a party of 6 or more. Which we fought very hard for here. I have to tip out also to bartenders, bussers, and some cooks wheather i make it or not. IM not asking for much just a fair gratutity, which is accuatlly considered as a gift. I pay taxes on gifts…..YEP!!!! And i pay a certian percentage per shift for taxes( more for swing than days or graveyard). Going out to dinner is considered entertainment remember that. And people should expect to pay for entertainment including tip. T I P to insure prompt service.
Gee, “A-List” of left-wing radical celebutards who say they are for the downtrodden, the oppressed, the victims . . . yet they treat the regular people, the people that buy tickets to their movies, their concerts, their live shows like dirt.
These “celebrities” are frauds.
To you waitstaff out there that have been treated bad by these phonies, quit whining and just spit in their food next you have to serve them.
And they are all Democrats, hmmm, interesting.
My tattoo artist has a sign by his station that says “jesus knows when you don’t tip.” I find it very funny.
HOW DID SOME OF THE PRACTICES OF SHARING YOUR TIPS WITH THE BUSBOY,BARTENDER,ETC GET STARTED? I ALWAYS ASK THE WAITRESS OR WAITER IF THEY HAVE TO SHARE THEIR TIPS. IF THEY DO,I TIP HIGHER THAN NORMAL. DURING SCHOOL, I WAS A WAITRESS,AND BELIEVE ME, IT IS HARD WORK.
I THINK THE WAITRESSES & WAITERS SHOULD UNITE TO FORCE THE ESTABLISHMENTS TO PAY THE STAFF MORE,AT LEAST MINIMUM WAGE. THE TIPS SHOULD BE JUST THAT, A TIP TO SHOW APPRECIATION FOR GOOD SERVICE.
AMERICA HAS SOME NUTTY PRACTICES,AND NOT PAYING STAFF ENOUGH IS ONE OF THE MAJOR ONES.
SOME STAFF DO NOT DESERVE SHARING WAITERS TIPS,AS THE SERVICE IS ALL BASED ON THE WAITER OR WAITRESSES AND IS TIPPED ACCORDINGLY.ANY GRIPES IS USUALLY GIVEN TO THE WAITER, NOT THE BUSBOY!!!!!!
I grew up watching my dad (who had no money to speak of) always figure the right amount to tip. He always tipped even if service wasn’t good. He always said they might be having some trouble. People need to accept it: it is the right thing to do 90% of the time. I have zero respect for the Hollywood crowd who is always screaming about treatment of the poor and bashing the “establishment”. They truly believe they are the chosen ones—didn’t France do something about that years ago in what we now know as the “Revolution”?
I have 2 more: Bruce Willis won a ton of money on a craps table and did not tip the dealers, Michael Jordan leaves nothing at restaurants.
I will tip, simply because society expects it and personally I would be too embarassed not to so. However, that aside, I emphatize with the person who said that when she and her husband go out, it is a treat for them, and that if they had to leave a larger tip, they could not treat themselve. I have never worked in an industry that tips, and personally would not take a job that would not at the very least guarantee minimum wage. However, that said, I can emphatize with a friend of mind, who simply refuses to tip. She told me that she has never been tipped before and she does not understand why others (ie. Taxie drivers, etc…) should expect to get tipped. I am not a wealthy person, and I do agree that anyone who can order a $300 bottle of wine can afford to be a good tipper (although they would not need to be extravagant.) However, simply because someone is rich, or famous, does not really mean that they need to be extravagant with the waiter or waitress. If they wish to be, that is wonderful, but that is not their job to be extravagant. I am sure that they work as hard for their money as we do, as waiters and waitresses do, as well. Furthermore, I agree that the work involved in obtaining a $30 and a $300 bottle of wine should be approximately the same, therefore, I do not believe that they need to pay excess tips, for a job that would have required less tipping for a similar task. However, I believe that if people can afford to tip well, it is certainly in their best interest to do so. Tipping well, will basically guarantee, that the next time that they come to that restaurant, they will be treated like a king.
NOTHING makes me angrier than stupid people who complain about tipping. As someone who worked in restaurants to put myself through college, I can tell you how it works. Many servers are required to PAY bussers, hostesses, bar tenders, dishwashers, backwaiters, and expos. They are also taxed on 12% of their total sales, and paid $2.13 an hour. This means that if a server goes to work and doesn’t make any tips, they have to pay to work. Thats right. PAY TO WORK. I can think of no other professions outside of the service industry in which an employee would be required to PAY money for having a bad day at work.
So customers, if tipping is a problem for you, I have two suggestions. First, you can take the matter up with restaurant owners or your local lawmakers. Their refusal to require a decent hourly wage for their employees puts the burden of payment on you, the paying customer. The problem does not lie with “greedy” servers. If this this solution doesn’t suit you, I suggest you learn to cook.
I completely agree with you Lisa. My experience with anyone in the business, famous or not, is that if they think they’re ‘entitled’ then you can kiss a decent tip good bye. Basically, the ones that run you to death and complain for no other reason than to be the center of attention, are as a whole, horrendous tippers. When I was young and naive I always wanted to wait on the celebrities, you do everything but lick their feet and they ‘toss’ you a quarter as if you should be thanking the gods for being in their presence. Whatever. Give me a hard working Joe that appreciates good service anyday. To you, I bow in friendship and am happy to accomadate, all you others who never outgrew your terrible twos….go F*** yourselves.
OBVIOUSLY, the people that don’t think it’s necessary to tip, have NEVER worked in the restaurant industry. In this country, EVERYONE knows that tipping is expected, so if some rich mogul purposely doesn’t tip, it’s a slap in the face to the waitstaff. How horrible must the service be to not deserve anything? Even I leave a couple of bucks when the service isn’t exactly outstanding.
I was a waitress for 20 years, a single mom with two kids and I relied on tips to help support us because the wages were not enough. I went to work and left my troubles at home, I was always laughing, joking, and having fun, it paid off, I made really good tips, but then I really enjoyed my job. I enjoyed meeting people. Now when I go out to eat I base the tip on the service not the percentage, if the service is good so is the tip. These stars should not forget what its like to struggle and try to make a living. My advise to them is be a good person and remember its people like us who helped them get where they are.
I wish you’d all stop the whining and complaining. I worked as a waitress myself and although there were plenty of cheapskates out there the majority of my customers were not, and at the end of the night/week/month I was never ‘in the hole’. On the contrary. I averaged $200 (my take) a night x 20 days a month…you do the math. And this was by no means an upscale establishment in a town with a median HOUSEHOLD income of $32.000.
So for a job that didn’t require much of an education, and I’m talking college, not researching which wine goes better with lamb, I’d say making $ 28.00 + an hour was pretty sweet.
I’ve since moved on and gotten a ‘real’ job but I asure you I have not even come close to making this kind of money.
Notoriuously complaining waitstaff are up there right along UAW workers….(but that’s a different pet peeve of mine).
For those who have never worked in the industry, don’t let these guys fool you into believing that they are barely making ends meet with all these lousy tippers out there. What a crock….
If you don’t make good money as a waiter/waitress then YOU are at fault…don’t blame it on the occasional ‘bad apple’.
If you have a unusual high number of bad tippers start evaluating the kind of service you are providing .
Sorry I thought I lost the first comment, but I meant what I said in both. It sucks getting old.
I have worked in restraunt buisness before as a server/waitress. It is not easy making $2.13/hour to make a living. What no one realizes, most companies require you to claim your tips at the end of your shift which is based on the total of the receipts for their shift. The IRS wants their money whether you make it or not. You do not claim the money you didn’t make and you will get audited which is another expense for many. Also, most establishments also require the servers to tip out the host, the bus person, and the bar which can run up to 5%. I alway try to leave a minimum of 15% even for crappy service. For great service, I leave 20% to 25%. I have left $25 on a $100 check before. If I can do, they can do it. They have the money. If they don’t have the money to tip, they should not be going to eat.
Dont celebs generally travel with a large entourage and eat at only the fanciest places. perhaps they dont tip in order to maintain the separation of classes. or, maybe not, i wouldnt know, im nobody. but i suspect that most of the time they act just like people. they usually auto-grat you with a table of 5-8 or more. the auto-grat is usually 18% and i usually try to tip 15% if the service is tops and that can go on the credit card reciept and the servers cant hide it. i figure thats plenty. my tabs are generally under $100, too. i suppose if my check was thousands of dollars i might tip a smaller percentage since it is just as much work to carry a $10 plate as it is a $100 plate. i sat at a table and explained to a young man just the other night that the cost of the tip is part of the price of the meal, if you cant afford to tip you cant afford to eat there. then, same night, i stiffed a waitress on the tip, the service was horrible, had to sign the check with a crayon and we never got our app, among other things. maybe it was me. i left a penny on the table. the tip has to be earned and service has become a thing of the past most places now. the wealthy are wealthy because they know how to hang on to a buck and have no intentions of making anyone else rich. what a shame… tip your waitress, she makes $2.13/hr!
I agree with Carrie and Chad – if you’re rich you should tip well, and VERY well at that. If you act like you can’t afford it, don’t go into a restaurant. No wonder the rich have such a bad reputation! I work as a secretary and I go out to eat about once a month, but when I do I always tip at least 20% and more baecause I consistently receive good service. Waitstaff aren’t fools, they know good service results in good tips. And I always appreciate their efforts to make my few nights out for dinner a pleasant experience. Also, a note to ‘rick’ above – boy, you’re a real work of art! Do you think being a ‘minority’ instantly puts you in the same category as a-holes and white trash? I’m a so-called ‘minority’ (although there’s nothing minor about me at all!), and you offend me by attributing such despicable behaviour to a person’s skin color or perceived social status. Why I bother I don’t even know, but here goes — a person’s color or social status has nothing to do with a lack of tact, class and basic values that emphasize being considerate of others. And those of us who weren’t raised in a cave by the KKK are well versed of this fact.
People wait at these high-brow establishments because they are making a good living at it. Enough bitching already. Has it ever occured to you whiners that maybe you weren’t tipped well because your service is not all as great as you think it is?
I was a waitress for many years, when I dine out I always leave a 15% tip, but never understood why it should be the diners responsibility to leave a tip, in my opinion the restaurant should pay better wages and eliminiate tipping
Thing is these people are just people and when everyone else wises up and realizes that and stops doting on them and giving them special treatment maybe they will get a clue. They are just a bunch of entertainers, its not like they are saving the world. wait on a bunch of soldiers at a restraunt and you’ll never wait on a more grateful polite group of people who are saving the world. Stars act the way they do because people elivate and give them special treatment they do not deserve. They are just people and don’t deserve anything more special then the next ordinary guy in the door.
It is obvious that the people who don’t tip have never worked in a restaurant and don’t understand that if you do not tip appropriately the server basically has to pay for taking care of you. Or maybe you do understand that concept and you just don’t care. Therefore, if you don’t care about that then you do not deserve good service or the right to go to a nice restaurant just stick with Burger King or McDonalds that is what you deserve. If the service is not good that is one thing but when it is, the least you should tip is 15%. Oh and just a heads up for those of you who frequent a place and do not tip well or at all, you can rest assured that the servers recognize you, and they will give you bad service on purpose and take care of the other guests since they already know that it will not be profitable to take care of you, oh and I’m sure that at some point in time someone has done something to your food or drink, don’t screw the people that are in complete control of what you eat and drink you idiot. I have been in the business a long time and I have never done anything and will never ( that is definetely bad karma) but I have heard about some things that would make your stomach turn.
Oh and Aqua this is how things are here if you don’t like it leave we don’t want you here anyway you are probably getting those “hard earned wages” from one of OUR jobs go back to Britan and work one of your own jobs.
AG you clearly do not understand the business, my hope for you is that you lose your current job and are forced to work a serving job for at least 6 months(then you could get your old job back) I’m sure that you would come back from that experience with a completely different attitude.
Finally, the restaurants could raise the pay of the waiters so that tipping would only be something extra but they would just raise the prices of all the meals and the drinks to make up for it, so you would still end up paying the approximately the same amount.
For those who complain about 15%, you’ve probably have never worked in a restaurant and don’t realize the total take home equation. Servers usually show up early and stay late making $2.40 an hour. Tips don’t just cover the meal but is part of the whole equation.
For those who complain about tipping, if you are not willing to tip for the meal, then you shouldn’t buy it. It’s part of the price and not really optional provided that the server does their job. If you don’t want to be served, stay at home or go to a McDonalds.

if you work in a finedining restaurant you expect an educated, well groomed and sophisticated clientele. So it is the waiters duty to be educated and have a certain level of sophistication, not unlike the clientele, to ensure that said clientele feels comfortable with the server and wait staff. In the restaurant i work at, the owner encourages being wine savvy and food savvy so that we get return diners and reviews. He will also pay for wine and spirits training and for a portion of the sommelier certification program. In this country being educated at any level is normally rewarded by reasonable wages. When it comes down to tipping in a restaraunt the amount of money you recieve in tips usually reflects on the servers knowledge of wine, food and attentive service. Ive come to the conclusion that most educated people are aware of the type of service that is expected at most fine dining restaurants, and are proper tippers. These people you are all ranting about, save a couple, are not well educated enough to recognize the level of service that they are being given. I have enough confidence in my own ability to know that as a bartender, server and sommelier, i am probably more educated than they are. The people you ant about are actors ( very little or no school, and mentally unstable, thats what makes them good ), athletes ( went to school for the purpose of sports and were handed everything on a silver platter ) or geeks that know nothing but the crazy ideas that go on in there heads. So you should be intuitive enough to spot these kinds of people and know that you might not get a sizable tip and in turn it wont be a big let down, its not your fault its theirs. Just do our job and know that you are more well rounded and better suited to walk amongst the masses armed with enough knowledge of the world than most people. Now how do i explain OPRAH WINFREY’S refusal to acknowledge good service with at least a 15% tip? I guess some mysteries will never solved, like her weight problem.
i used be waited the tables for many years, when you eat my place i will service you very pro- and i would remembe what is u special needs and habit, in general i will give very attention and exellent service for 1st time, i will remembe how well you tips!!!!!!!!! , if not good, i’ll check myself if i did something not enough, or food is not a cause neither, I will give you 2nd chance to tip my good. that’s it! i have very good memores, i will recognise you while you walk in the door. next time you will get longer waiting for your foods, or, god know what… i nerve spit in your foods, but i will make sure you are NOT enjoy your time here. surprisely, they normoal still come to eat no matter what.
I worked in a bar for many years. I have come to find this. It doesn’t matter how great or how bad the service is. The tip is a total reflection of the person leaving it. Some people are jerks, and this includes people that have the money to tip well. So don’t complain about the service. If you tip poorly the reason lies completely within yourself.
or by the way, i am a very good tipper, other waitter or waitress they remember me, i will served like i am a high class celebrtity. so quit make excause and be genericity, what hurt if you leave a little bite more since house got you pay good and why not us?
Rick
What makes you think that minorities don’t tip well? What kind of tipper are you, since you seem to be so self-rightous.
To all of you ignorant, cheap people out there who are reading this, stop putting celebrities on a pedestal, if you are defending them for this, that probably means that you are just as cheap as they are. Most waiters and waitresses make a very low minimum wage ( usually around $2.13 per hour), they rely on peoples tips for their livelyhood. If you were in their shoes and someone came in that you knew had a lot of money and it was your job to serve them, do you honestly think anyone would give them bad service on purpose,or insult them by adding a gratuity (which many, especially rich people, find offensive). Having served in restaurants I can honestly tell you that it is HARD WORK, I’ll bet much harder work than what most of these celebrities can even imagine. It is true that not everyone is perfectly eloquent at waiting on your every need, but they wouldn’t be there if they didn’t need the money, so stop making there jobs so hard, and pay them the money that they deserve. The next time you go out to dinner realize that YOU are not the only people in the restaurant, let alone the only people that your Waiter is serving, and anything below 18% is offensive to most waiters, and could get that waiter fired for poor service if they can not explain why it is so low. STOP BEING SELFISH CHEAP, if you can afford spending that much money on food and drinks you can afford to leave a reasonable tip.
Ok i’m from the Land of Canada, I’m a server but at least I earn Minimum wage, Gonna point out the obvious here minimum wage is just that the wage you’re required to be paid as a minimum legally! I have worked in this industry for 10 years and have done every job imaginable in a restaurant or bar. Yes it’s not fair that servers earn peanuts but i’m going to point out the obvious we are unskilled labour, you want to earn more money go back to school and get an education or trade! Etiquette guides recommend a tip of 10 – 15% for good service in a restuarant, So for cripes sake stop whining about some one who is tipping that much! There are times when i’ve been so busy as a server that I understand why a table hasn’t tipped me enough, other times I literally want to turn around and ask someone SERIOUSLY!! I just ran like a headless chicken after you and your annoying brats who are physically incapable of behaving, I’ve gotten you a zillion refills cleared all your plates immediately, made sure everything with your meal is perfect and you think I don’t deserve a tip!!! I agree with the other posters if you can afford to go out for a meal then understadn if you’ve gotten awesome service leave an awesome tip, if you’ve gotten terrible service there is no better point than a penny on the table! You’re nto subsidising my wage but you are conforming to the standards expected in North America.
Yes, it is tough that wait staff is not paid a proper wage-but since their unions won’t do anything about that situation, the only current answer, is to tip 20% on the TOTAL BILL, unless service is bad, then 10% to 15%, as they are taxed on 15% of the total cost by the IRA, whether you tipped or not. If you don’t like that, just stay home. When you do not tip, you cause that person to actually LOSE money, because of the taxes…
Pierce Brosnan, at the height of his James Bond fame in ’80s, also tipped $20 on a $900 at a Hollywood strip restaurant (party of 8 as well) -for all 6 wait staff that serviced that table for 1 1/2 hours!-the next day they went to the “Brosnan” rule- for parties of 4 or more, 15% is added, and today it is 20%. Service is always excellent there as well. Always.
Tommy Lee Jones doesn’t tip either… I work in Houston and he showed up drunk at a reception. The rental car he was driving had many empty beer cans in it. Tommy and his wife enjoyed the reception, the liquor and food. When Tommy left he stiffed our valet.
Maybe this is just a regional thing…but don’t most places charge the gratuity to your tab when a dining party is over 8 guests? I know TGIF does…at least where I’m from. Or do celebrities get out of that as well, with the manager thinking the rich people might actually pay MORE than the 18% thats generally charged? Please, that’s a laugh.
Of course, that doesn’t even begin to touch on the celebrities that dined with a small party. They’re all simply inexcusable. Especially those that don’t leave a tip ‘because they don’t carry cash’. Okay, I understand that receiving cash as a tip and receiving a tip from someone’s credit card works a bit differently, but at least you’re getting paid something. And chances are, you’re going to get a bigger tip that way. So not having cash is absolutely NO excuse to not tip your server! This makes me angry and I have NEVER been a server…that’s just sad.
I work at a high end Vegas restaurant. I have been stiffed by Celibs and gotten a $ 100 tip from a guy in ripped blue jeans. It all works out in the end. Biggest asshole I have ever waited on was Micheal Phelps, what a complete jerk.
we usually tip15-20% for decent service and have actually tipped 40% for exceptional service at the holidays. On the other hand, if we feel snubbed by the waiter, we have been known to stiff them for the tip, but always explain to the manager on the way out. That way, at least they get a learning experience out of this table. I do agree that if you can afford to eat out, you can afford to tip, but you shouldn’t automatically tip, regardless of the service
I work at a nice Sushi restaurant for a while now and all servers get pay $2.13/ hour, but the trick to it is that we get about 2 penny on our paycheck because the owner says that the rest goes to tax. So two weeks i get pay no more than a dollar. Also on the tips that servers make, we have to tip out 20% of the tips we make that day to everyone else like bus-boys, (probably the owner), and sushi chefs. So in all, the table that doesn’t tips is like stealing money from servers because we have to tip out. Restaurant industry in US sucks, but that’s what help pays for college students’ tuition.
I have waited on Bill Cosby several times here in NYC and he is actually a very good tipper and a pleasure to wait on. It’s funny to see all the comments from Brits here. Eurotrash are the worst to wait on! Blacks and asian women are bad tippers usually, a few exceptions, but at least they are not snobbish like the Brits. PLZ stay in EUROPE, you’re not wanted here !
Tipping is a very important part of finishing your dining experience. 15-20% is the standard. When you get exellent service that % is increased. I had worked as a server for many years and had been tipped very genrously and a few times not at all. My best tip came from Tom Pettys band mates, I got to wait on them and was a little starstruck and managed to spill a strawberry margarita on one of the band members crisp white shirt. I started to cry (what a dork, huh) well I streightened up and copleted there service the best I could with a smile on my face and genuine sincerity, thinking I wasn’t going to be tipped at all well to my suprise they tipped me $60.00! It was very genrous and kind I was so appreciative that I cried again. Must have been ovulating? Oh and years ago Tempest Storm tipped very well for her toast and coffee and fruit. She is tiny with big hair.
average profit margin for a restaurant is (drumroll, please) 5% if you want them to include an actual living wage for servers (and how about health insurance, too?)- you can expect prices to rise by at least 25%. Yes, that goes for your crappy $300 a bottle wine, too. There are several restaurants that do not allow tipping, you should see the sticker shock on customer’s faces when they see the prices on the menu! No one in the country is unaware of the rules for tipping, and no one works harder for their wage than a food server. He11, I’d love to see tipping made mandatory in EVERY field; the shorter wait times and better attitudes at the DMV alone would make it worth my while, not to mention the ER or doctor’s office. Every self-entitled one of you would have to go to work each day in a cheerful mood, smile all the time, even when ill, actually MOVE your slow @sses to fill my needs (or no tip) and LIKE it. We could at least make it a once a year holiday, when everyone would have to find out what it feels like.
Tipping has gotten out of control…. I remember how it used to be 8% then 10% now it 15%…. For some yahoo that barely fills my water. If you expect a good tip you’d better bring your A game wait staff. Also if you wait in a TGI Friday I wouldn’t expect a big tip in the first place it not like its 5 star.
The nature of human nature is to be self absorbed. I’m a psychologist who waited tables for seven years getting my Doctorate. I tip at 20% plus because tips gave me my start in my life. I’m appalled by Europeans/Movie Stars/Wealthy Narcissist’s/ and all the ignorant self entitiled comments I read defending self centeredness on this forum. If I had to depend on the likes of Madonna or Barbara Streisand for my “shot” at life and college . . .I’d still be making a servers wage instead of 165.00/hour. My hats off to all those who serve . . .it’s hard work, requiring diligence and class and should be rewarded, and if you don’t, you are certifiably a full blown NARCISSIST! GET A LIFE. Working folks depend on those tips, it is the reason I can now be a professional. Thank you to all the dear souls who are responsible for my success through their generous tipping. May God bless them in all they do. Johnny Depp . . .you rule! Usher . . .you drool! Shame on those who forgot where they came from and the good fortune that has befallen them is a product of all those who helped them even servers.
As many have already cleared up. Basically, servers make their income off of tips, alone. When a server does not receive a tip you have asked someone else to work for you for free. The standard gratuity in the US is 15% for adequate service and 20% for exceptional service. This is the industry in the US, when you walk into a restaurant you have accepted these terms. In other words, I wouldn’t go to your job, stiff you, and merely ask that you demand compensation from your boss. I wouldn’t go to a foreign country and demand that they yield to my customs. As a server, if I have provided adequate service do not expect me to work for free or to revolt against my industry. As a customer, if these are terms that you can not accept, then please stay at home!
As most smart people know, never mess with someone who handles your food!
Below, I’ve attached an example of a celebrity that is aware of treating servers with respect and decency:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIGLW6g6qaQ&feature=related
Wait staff earning percentages of their sales which is dependent on the generosity of strangers is a load of BS. Their monthly bills aren’t based on a percentage of their income.
BTW, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Dion Sanders – all good tippers.
I really want to believe this. I wish bitterwaitress.com would come back. There you would have many many eaxamples about a celebrity. I have doubts about Michael Moore (not because I am fan) that would cloud his message and would backfire on the message he makes money on. I truly believe that many celebrities are cheap. But which ones actaully? I truly wish the old Bitterwaitress.com come back. I think the main reason it it gone is a testament to it’s effectiveness. I think some celebrity who got slammed over and over again took out their big gun lawyer and threatened the site.
What kills me is how menus often say at the bottom, “Tipping Should Be 15-20% of the Total Bill.” Excuse me?! SHOULD be?!! The percentage is getting higher and higher, while the service isn’t getting any better. One time, I had an unpleasant-tasting meal and when the server came by to ask how everything was, she had already turned around before I could get the words out of my mouth (she only waited long enough to hear my S/O’s answer). Guess I was lucky she even asked at all – they don’t seem to do that so often anymore.
I worked as a waitress for many years. I’ve waited on regular people and a few celebrities. The celebrities I waited on were very generous. I guess I got lucky! Any party that comes in and starts to whine about things is usually (from my experience) a lousy tipper. Well, I’ve known many servers in my day and they do serve “sneezers” when the party is known not to tip or just a pain in the you-know-where! So, maybe these lousy tippers better think twice before they stiff their servers or leave very little. There are the occasional bad servers but usually the restaurant will not let the inexperienced server wait on celebrities or people who are “high profile”…
I am 68 yrs. young, retired.. when I was younger and could not give a big tip.. it was 15%.. I now tip 20% down the line.. I have never had a real bad server.. But if I did I would figure she had a bad day.. Kids etc..and tip the same. Shirley Pedersen.
To Aqua
The restaurant is not the one who has to kiss your butt the server is. who cares that most industries do not rely on tips, it’s a big enough industry and the way it’s been done has been like that for a while, so that is not a good enough argument for you to make. if you want the restaurant to raise prices so that you have to pay a 20% tip weather the service was good or not then go ahead and try but until you see that on the news, do not punish your poor servers because you have poor manners. Good for that server in Miami that stood up for themself!
Umm, nope sorry, guys. You don’t tip on alcohol. It’s just not done. Never has. Now if you are at a bar, of course you tip your bartender around $1 a drink. At a restaurant 15% – 20% on the food service and some arbitrary amount per drink/bottle of wine $2-$5. Yeah I might have a lot of money, but I didn’t get it by throwing down a $60 tip on a bottle of wine. That’s ridiculous, and if a waiter had followed me out to complain about the tip I’d calmly go back in, and have them run my card again then take the tip off totally.
For all of you people who say that tipping is not necessary when the waitstaff makes way less than minimum wage I hope that the next time that you go to a restaurant that someone spits in your food because it does happen and worse.
I do not waitress anymore and haven’t in years but it is very hard work and they are very underpaid.
I once worked in a famous night club in the 70’s and 80’s,waited on many famous people, Usually the manegement was so star struck they comped the celebritys but still no tip. I waited on Cher and she left not a dime! Most of these people are too oblivious to anyone else to even consider the poor working stiffs. I’ve also worked for very wealthy and a few well known people and they are the cheapest! One who did the celebrity cruise thing and was given an “Honerarium” to boot wined like hell when she had to tip out the stewards and waiters!
its like this .when one of thes so called clebs arive all the wait staff knows in about 3 minutes .if they know the celeb is a cheap skate or acts like a ass hole .plan b . this is great and through the evening they will drink and consume some awfull body parts. from said staff.been there and dam shure did it
I did room service for Sean Penn and he was very generous. Not only did he pay the 18% auto added on the bill, but he tipped another $10. He didn’t even have me set the table up, he just answered the door, took the table at the door and politely handed me the cash.
I went to Cancun with some friends and one of them tipped a waiter a peso…now THAT’S a bad tipper!
Another note about people that work at bars and restaurants….our insurance is more expensive. Especially if you work in a bar. Our job is considered high risk by insurance standards. Like I said before…..the tip is the reflection of the person leaving it.
I agree with Frank Rizzo above. 20% is what a server gets if he does his job competently and possesses basic social skills. It goes up or down 5% depending on whether I get excellent or bad service. To get less than 15% from me you have to be a real knuckledragger on top of being incompetent. Rarely happens.
IN RESPONSE TO: Cheaptastic { 02.03.09 at 2:26 pm } Tipper is not mandatory. Any waiter who always expects a tip should get a different job. Can you reasonable expect a 15 percent tip on $700? That’s greedy. Waiters should shut up and serve.
Cheaptastic: You are the epitomy of what is wrong with the world!!! Seriously on a $700 bill i am sure as hell expecting MORE than a 15% tip, and no thats not greedy – cause i just ran my booty off for you to make sure you have a good evening, and seriously as others have stated before WE PAY TAXES ON OUR SALES NOT OUR ACTUAL TIPS!!!!! So inevitably, after i tip out my Busser, Bartender, Expo, Host and kitchen(yes this is how my restaurant works!) I am gonna have to pay the federal and state governments to have served you….So i ask you Cheaptastic Can you Reasonably expect that? And the only Greed i can see in this situation is the fact that you could afford a $700 meal but arent willing to tip (even though you DEFINITELY can afford that too!!!) P.S. Check your english dipshit cause you obviously don’t even have the Mental Aquity to form a proper sentence, no wonder your dumb ass cant get the tip right! SO, with that said CHEAPTASTIC, why dont you SHUT UP, and Pull the Extra $20 out of your pocket – we both know it doesnt mean shit to you!
AND AS IT HAS BEEN STATED BEFORE IF YOU CANT AFFORD THE TIP/FOOD – GO TO THE GROCERY STORE AND COOK YOUR OWN DAMN FILET MIGNON – IM SURE IT WILL SUCK, AND YOU WILL BE BACK TO THE RESTAURANT OF CHOICE WITH YOUR TIP IN HAND READY TO GO!
OH AND BTW – ITS NOT LIKE ANY OF US SERVERS EVER DESIRED TO BE HERE!!! I MEAN REALLY YOU THINK I WAS DREAMING ABOUT SERVING YOUR SCUM OF THE EARTH FACE WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL- HELL NO!!! BUT WE DO WHAT WE HAVE TO, TO PAY THE BILLS, AND I AM SURE EVERY SERVER IN THIS COUNTRY WILL AGREE WITH ME WHEN I SAY HOW LUCKY I AM TO HAVE THE JOB I DO IN THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE! BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOUR BITTER ASS JUST GOT LAID OFF LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!
KITTY BABY – I LOVE YOU PROBABLY THE BEST COMMENT ON THIS WHOLE PAGE!

ALLWAYS TIP YOUR BELLMAN……
I think the gov’t should just make it law everyone has to work as wait staff & in the retail industry ea. for a min. of 6 months bet everyone will start to tip better and not yell at the first person they see at the till cause of their so called problem
Most of these high dollar checks already have a 15% gratuity fixed into the bill so quit whining about not getting an additional tip. The people that should be complaining are the customers that had this “gratuity” forced upon them! Furthermore, when you complain about specific incidents with specific people you greatly reduce the chances of these high dollar patrons coming back to the restaurant. To you that might mean anything but to the person who owns the establishment it means alot. So quit your complaining or find another job where you are not reliant on the genorosity of others. Not everybody feels the need to tip (especially when service is sub par) just because you chose a minimum wage job.
I work as a waitress and the more a person has, the less they
tip. Their demanding, complain anout nothing and their the
rudest bunch of people. The stars who I’ve waited on either
didn’t leave a tip or the tip was crappy or they said the
service was lousy and I didn’t deserve a tip, but I got back at a
few of them. I worked as a waitress in a poker room and the
stars that came in would play poker. The cheap ones usually
played cheap games and when I saw “Mr or Ms Star” at a
table, I would sit there and play and time after time, they
would buy rack after rack of chips, only to lose them to me.
One time, one of the “cheaps” said that I should give him a
break and I told him that I had to earn some extra money
some where, because there are so many lousy tippers in this
room. Right after that, when he came in, I got tipped. The
ones who have huge bills to pay and leave nothing, then that’s
the ones who should be boycotted at the movies.
When I was a waitress, my boss would add up the costs of all the orders i had taken and then claim 15% on the costs as tips in my paycheck, which was then taxed. So when someone stiffed me that was money out of my pocket. Which is really frustrating. Anyway I agree if you can’t afford to tip 15% stay home….
FYI – from the Federal Labor Laws 2007 (published by JJ Keller) – “Tip Credit” – Employers of “Tipped Employees” must pay an hourly wage of at least $2.13/hour… then, if at the end of that employee’s shift, their hourly + tips wages do not equal the Minimum Wage of $6.55/hour (current as of July 24, 2008… will be $7.25/hour starting July 24, 2009), the employer is required to pay the difference to equal that Minimum Wage amout.
Just thought I’d share, so that people aren’t thinking that a waiter/waitress is really going home with only $2 to $3 per hour on a bad night full of bad tippers. I get that they still really should be getting tipped what is right and fair (and shouldn’t be getting stiffed by those who are known to be wealthy!), but I will say this… they are still going home with much more $ in their pocket than, say, the lowest ranked staff members at Taco Bell, McDonald’s, Subway, Circle K, etc. And I know for a fact, those people work their tails off just as hard, and are in just as much danger as other service jobs. (***Best friend was attacked working at a convenience store on more than 1 occasion!). Everyone deserves their due credit… just don’t give yourself TOO much credit. ;o)
Okay, first I was just angry about the story and the idea of all these rich idiots not tipping. Now, I can agree that if you receive bad service you shouldn’t reward a server for that, because yes, it IS their job to see to your needs. If a server doesn’t feel that way, I’d say they need to find a new job. Bottom line.
But what really makes me angry, more so than the idiot rich, are the idiots on this forum who are griping about how the standard for tipping has gone up. Someone actually said that it used to be 8% and blah blah blah. Ummm…do you live in a hole in the ground? Do you not see that EVERYTHING has gone up in price? It’s a fact of life…things get more expensive, and people’s wages go up. Or maybe you don’t pay attention to the news…so maybe you don’t know that the Federal Minimum Wage is going to go up to 7.25 soon. What do you think that’s going to do to the prices of everything? Think they’re just going to stay the same? Pull your head out of the clouds please, because you’re just annoyingly dense. But I guess you think that since these people are just servers, they don’t deserve to have their compensation go up JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE’S. There’s special names for people like you, and none of them appropriate for this forum.
What is wrong with these cheap people? Don’t they realize what can happen to that food of their’s while it’s still in the kitchen? Spit, urine and other nasty things can find their way into those food plates of theirs. Who do think think they are, Sociopaths! Well there are many waiters and cooks too who are Sociopaths and Sociopaths can do really bad things to other people’s food.
The cheapest MF in creation has got to be Scottie “No Tippin” Pippen. He would drop next to nothing at the club I worked at after getting comp’d most of the time for his drinks. He once run up a tab for over $1000 for him and all his lackeys and he left a $5 tip. It was the funniest thing in the world to see his face when the server returned the $5 tip saying “you obviously need this more than I do.”
Roger Clemens never tips, gets aeveryone else to tip for him
Lots of people don’t tip, my husband did not but now does cause i am a former waitress and know what it takes to do a good job. I would have a cause to believe that the famous (but they aren’t the only ones) don’t tip well, but if a waiter or waitress does not do a good job then well no tip! I think that some people feel that they deserve somthings extra (their egos talking) but then they should be paying for it too! I myself will tip at least 15% of the bill but I know when a server is working for the 20% tip and will tip it if its warranted! Lets face it some people are plain cheap!
I worked at a casino near chicago and had many celebs. Worst tipper was Micheal Jordan…I mean come on!!!
Waiting tables is the hardest work I’ve ever done. It hits on all levels: emotionally, physically, intellectually, and requires an excellent memory.
I have found cowboys, blacks, and women to be the worst tippers. The cowboys are just mean-spirited, the blacks, I can tell, don’t know better so I was okay with their feeble efforts, women seemed to be learning.
I expect the rich simply do not understand what it’s like to work for a living. I’m an electrician now and the wealthy often are uncomfortable around my workers. I simply limit the work I do for the arrogant ones.
The tipping percentage has NOT gone up and I was waiting table in the 70’s. Most people were fine, like always, but we sure would get some lulu’s in.
For the most part, I can understand both sides of it. I can see why someone who works as a server feels that the tips are important to their overall income. From a customer standpoint, I don’t have a problem with tipping. If service is slow, for example, I will take into consideration how full the restaurant is. I think intelligent, reasonable people do recognize that slow service is not always a reflection of unprofessionalism on the part of the server. I appreciate attentive, courteous service but I don’t run servers ragged because I think they’re the dirt beneath my feet. There is such thing as a courteous customer. Anyone can be an asshole. I get tired of people focusing so much on celebrities’ so-called bad behavior or lack of consideration when so many people who aren’t remotely involved in that industry are rude and demanding to servers just because. Many people love to feel important by making others feel inferior. When did being an asshole become the lone characteristic of the famous? One time I saw a customer complain to the manager of a Red Lobster claiming the server had done something he had not. What was the point of that? Because she was having a bad day, and so now someone has to pay for it? As far as this list goes, why would someone even bother to keep track of how these people tip in the first place? If this list is even slightly accurate, it makes me wonder who is benefitting from leaking the information. A restaurant is a business the last time I checked. LOL. Who agreed to sift through the day’s customers to find out if a celebrity stiffed them? Aren’t there more important duties to address?
I have never worked in the food service industry of any kind but as someone else pointed out, if you think the owners and businesses should pay the servers more and drop the tips altogether, then you can be sure you will not only be paying more for your meal, it will be mandatory and no longer a gratuity for good service. I don’t know when they came up with the idea of tipping instead of just paying the server better wages but I do think it was a good idea. Think about it, it causes the waitstaff to try harder to give you good service etc., and gives you the option to not pay generously if they decide it’s not worth a good tip to give you good service.
I’ve been to restaurants where the server tried his or her best it seemed, and certain members of my family still found every little fault they could to end up stiffing them tip wise in the end. What do they want from these waitstaff.. an a$$ wiping too?
No one is perfect so don’t expect servers to be perfect either, ie. stop rating them badly if they ocassionally forget an item, they are usually working many tables at once and having to remember scads of different little things everyone wants. And most try.
I can’t stand people who complain about tipping. I work in a popular retaurant in Nashville that is frequented by many celebrities. Servers only make $2.13 an hr and our entire income is based upon tips. To everyone that has a problem with tipping 15 to 20 percent please stay you red-neck or ghetto black ass at home and mexicans $2.00 on a $100 dollar cheque is unexceptable.
There are some good tippers such as Vince Young, Martina McBride, and Dolly Parton are all excellent tippers.
Why does the majority of wait staff feel like the tip should be based on the amount of the bill alone? I base my tip on how clean the restaurant is, does my waiter/waitress have clean hands and look presentable, or they personable or rude, is the service prompt, is the food hot and is it edible when I receive it? I walk in the door with intentions of giving 20%. The amount I leave is based on the criteria listed above. Also, if gratuity is added by the restaurant I do not leave a tip based on the fact that the management has already put a price on the service rendered and charged my card accordingly. I do however think that servers should be paid no less than minimum wage and be allowed to keep their tips without having to share with their co-workers.
I always tip well as I worked in the food service industry while I was working my way thru college and know what a good tip means and how it helps out the staff. It can make your entire night and make a hard job a little bit more bearable. I always tip 20% and depending on food/service it could be more. It’s just food… Share the cash. Some of my well-heeled friends are cheap and I think the above behaviors by celebrities really reflects on who/what they are. The megalomaniac syndrome comes into play here and they feel just by coming to your establishment and gracing you with their presence you should be waiting on their highness for free. What a joke!!!! They don’t know how the real world works. Not to bash any celebrities but King James stiffed the valet driver (white) when one of his friends was going to pay a good tip. Took the money out of his hand and said no- we make this club hot by just being here- they should pay us! The valet guy was speechless. Little actions say alot and tipping/attitudes reflects on people… bet on it. over and out.
If we raised waitstaff wages to the point where tips were unecessary – the increase in cost would be reflected in the menu. Then we’d really hear the cheap tippers howl!
I’ve been involved in the service industry for 19 years. I believe there are a number of factors that determine what amount of gratuity you receive. Factor no. 1, your enthusiasm and hard work. Factor 2, your appearance and grooming.Factor 3, the ability to stand out and perform your job in an exemplary fashion. If you do this and get stiffed by your clientele then it’s acceptable to assume that they are ingnorant and condescending people.Just move on and make sure you remember who they are. If they are high paid celebrities be sure to add them to this list!
I once waited on KRS-1 a legendary rapper…we comped his meal…no tip!!
This list indicates the obvious — there is a high probability that blacks will leave a lousy tip
Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods are the WORST! Neither of them EVER tip and they are both real dicks.
Jessica Alba and new hubby Cash are GREAT tippers! So is Phil Mickleson
Everyone posting needs to come to:

Tipping is explained in detail. Servers and customers alike debate over what is an average tip, good tip, and excellent tip for the type of service you all are describing here.
For servers on this post thinking you pay taxes on the sales: WRONG. You pay taxes on the money you make. If your job reports on your W-2 form that you made 10,000 in one year, you owe the taxes on that money, not the sales you did.
For people who are posting about bad tippers because of poor service, I doubt servers venting on the bad tip gave poor service. Why would a crappy server complain about a crappy tip?
Tips in family chains and diners tend to be average or lower. It’s rare to see 20% or higher, plus the added fact that the check average is much lower.
However, these celebs probably visit the more upscale restaurants, and as an experienced waiter, they tend to be more demanding.
With those demands, it would be appreciated if they could tip 20% when those needs are met. Otherwise, they are listed on the little black book as being poor tippers.
Want more debate? Click on the link and post away with your thoughts and opinions. The extreme posters (server or customer) will always lose.
Imagine that…all these people are liberal democrats. Liberals are the biggest hypocrites on the planet.
This from people who make millions from doing about a couple of months worth of work. And also, the majority of them all praise how liberal they are and let’s fight for the poor and give them more…..but yet coming from their own pocket, leave nothing. Do they not know that this is how wait staff survive?!?! The make barely nothing for an hour’s worth of work and their tip is their pay…..what are they thinking??? RUDE celebrities!
There’s no need to ridicule anyone for not tipping. it’s a personal choice and if someone feels that it’s worth it then sure.” And if restaraunts are charging ridiculous prices than maybe percentages shouldn’t apply”. Restaraunts never charge less then what the actual meal costs, maybe it’s the restaraunts’ fault.
And save the “… the people who pay to watch their movies and buy their CDs…” argument. Why should an artist HAVE to pay extra; because it’s their job- they become famous, and suddenly they have a greater obligation to tip? NO.
Listen to Mr. Pink in the opening scene of Reservoir Dogs.
Amazing how many holier-than-thou, far left liberals are on this list, isn’t it?
I read the entire list of nasty tippers. I agree with someone’s philosophy about what goes around comes around; good thought on that! Just remember STAR struck people, Father God is watching you!!! You WILL be punished for hurting people; count on it!
Tiger Woods claims he don’t tip because he doesn’t carry cash???????????? Ask any dealer in vegas that has given him a million dollars (yes winnings) and hasn’t received squat if he has the cash on him. I also seem to remember a note in Maxim magazine that said he gave a waitress a $5 tip then asked for it back because he thought it was a dollar. hey, at least she got something.
Maybe the wait staff didn’t deserve tips. I’ll bet the person Britney dissed was probably rude and nasty, so he or she deserved what they got. No one is “obligated” to tip anyone. If the person is that desperate on tips for full time income, but is unwilling to work for it…then maybe they should re-consider working in restaurants!
I waited table for years and waited on many celebrities. When they come in with a large group they assume they are getting “autograted” (tip automatically added) so they don’t leave a tip. Celebrities get their lives handled for them- they don’t think about tipping but it doesn’t mean they are opposed to it. Sometimes I’ve had to work with other servers who insist they can get a bigger tip if they don’t automatically add the tip. big mistake especially as the group gets drunk. Don’t be greedy- just take what the autograt is. Marty Stuart is not a cheap tipper- not a huge tipper but fair. He is a friendly and easy man to wait on. Tiger Woods and his family was amazingly rude to me years ago right before he became famous. Unfortunately for this article, they did leave me a basic but not great tip. Rude doesn’t mean bad tip necessarily. Bobby Brown may have been cheap but Whitney Houston was generous when I had to box up her dinner because she was being harrassed by other people in the restaurant. There is another side to this.
i was thinking the same as david ,it seems their all liberal assholes, thats ok by the the time the monkey in chief gets thru theywill be broke too. hehehe
Also, it’s a well known fact that in many of the upscale restaurant the gratuity is written right in the restaurant bill. Anywhere from a 10% -25% gratuity is common for large groups. So don’t give us all this bull about non-tipping celebrities…they’re not stupid and can read a restaurant bill as well as anyone else.
there are many bad celebrity tippers but it is only fair to list some great tippers
“SIR CHARLES BARKLEY” all of vegas loves you baby
Big whoop!! no one cares…………….
Ok lets get this all straight. I have been in the industry for more than 20 yrs I’m now 37. Does anyone understand that the bartender and or waiter waitress pays taxes on what they sale. That the waiter tips out the bartender for what he or she sells. Iv waited on many celebs and they do suck. If I sell 500.00 worth of booze and tip out is 10% and the celeb stiffs me then it cost me to wait on them. I leave owing money. And so you all know 20% is the regular now. This 10% was in the 80’s 15% in the 90’s. Wake up people this is 2009. And yes we make as little as 3.00 hr. If u celebs think we spit in your food I wouldnt put it past some people. And all service staff people remember faces like no other. So to all that read this think if you would like going home from your work and when you clock out you have to give your boss money for coming to work. TIP PEOPLE TIP WELL AND YOU WILL BE TREATED BETTER THAN CELEBS EVER WILL.
It’s prbly not their fault they are celebrities. . . they’re just to effing stupid to calculate their tip. We are supposed to feel sorry for the mentally challenged not hate them. It’s not their fault they were deprived of oxygen at birth! Blame their doctors. . . but they should take care. I had a friend who was a waitress and let me just tell u. U REALLY (I mean REALLY) don’t want to f*ck with ur waiter or waitress and I won’t even go there just trust me on this one.
None of those people above are real people anyways. They are basically just puppets and clowns that entertain the rest of us that actually have souls. Booyah, peace im outta here.
This story needs more info. Places will usually charge a gratuity on large parties, groups that stay a long time or have realy large tabs. Are these tip on top of a gratuity that was included in the bill? How was the service? Was it a bunch of post high school kids that didn’t know ice water from their elbows or was it profesional compitent staff? There’s no excuse fo letting you kids run wild in someone’s establishment but the tipping portion of this story needs more facts.
I waited on Dan Marino. He was extremely nice and left a very appropriate tip.
First of all: 20% is now the standard–deal with it. And anyone who believes they should’nt tip on a bottle of wine or not tip as much as normal on any high dollar menu item should KNOW THAT YOUR SEVER NORMALLY HAS TO PAY HIS/HER SUPPORT STAFF AN AVERAGE OF 5%. If you do not tip a bottle of wine you are costing your server money out of their pocket to serve you that wine.If you can not comprehend the fact that part of dining out is tipping 20% for good service, stay home for your meals!
why tip at all, resturants overcharge anyway for shots of vodka they charged me for what the bottle cost. plus you wouldn’t want something like this to happen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiHqnfi4PRI&feature=PlayList&p=7EE6C2622E5762F5&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=8
RICH PEOPLE SUCK!!!
i don’t believe that it’s always like this. i think some of the celebrities may do it. i also think many wait staff isn’t very good at their job and don’t deserve a tip. seems they too are a bit on the whinny side
DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER DON’T HAVE ANY MONEY, WITH HIS BROKE DOWN UGLY ASS.
THE FAMOUS STARS DON’T FORGET WHO MAKES THEM FAMOUS AND WHO FEEDS THEM…WE DO, WHEN WE GO THE MOVIES, WHEN WE BUY THEIR MUSIC OR MOVIES. THEY SHOULD CONSIDER THAT SERVERS DON’T GET PAID MUCH AND DEPEND ON THEIR TIPS TO MAKE IT…IT’S SAD THAT WHEN THEY HAVE AND THE MORE THEY HAVE, THEY FORGET HOW THEY GOT THERE AND WHO GOT THEM THERE
I worked in tipping establishments in Hollywood for years and I can tell you how common it is for people to not consider staff who are earning minimum wage and who work very hard for tips whether they come or not.
I don’t want to judge. I think when people consider themselves above the “standard” percentage for tipping it shows complete self centeredness which is all too common.
People who frequent these establishments are sure to be treated based on how they tip in this money oriented society. A tipper will always be favored, and the mor the better, over a cheap or nonexistent tipper.
What comes around goes around. The fact that they are celebrities just creates a way for the story to reach a wider audience, but the general public varies wildly in this respect of tipping as well.
they dont have to tip just like the rest of us.. and y do it have to be a big tip cause they famous.. i would say it depends on the service and dont go over 15%
IF I WORK IN A RESTRAUNT AND TIGER WOODS CAME IN TO EAT, I WOULD SPIT IN HIS FOOD. HE IS RACIST AND DENY THAT HIS BIG HEADED ASS HAS SOME BLACK IN HIM!
MARIAH SHOULD GO ON A DIET, SHE PROBALY GIVE HER MONEY TO NICK CANNON BROKE ASS.
I USED TO BE A SERVER AND I THINK IT IS CRAZY THAT WAITSTAFF IS NOT PAID A REG WAGE, YEAH WHEN TIPS ARE GOOD THEY HELP BUT WHEN IT IS SLOW AND NO TIPS , THAT SUCKS . I THINK SPITTING IN SOMEONES FOOD IS GROSS BUT THAT IS WHY I DON’T EAT OUT I AM NOT TAKING THE SPIT FOR A BAD TIPPER OR A WAITERS BAD MOOD OR WHAT EVER ELSE THEY ARE WHINING ABOUT THAT DAY…… .THE ENTITLEMENT IN THIS COUNTRY IS AMAZING IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT GET ANOTHER JOB YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO BIGGER TIPS BECAUSE SOMEONE HAS MORE MONEY THAN YOU IT IS YOUR JOB YOU PICKED IT….JUST SERVE THE FREAKING FOOD AND SHUT UP…
Obviously some people making comments have never been in the service industry where your earnings are dependent on tips. People with class tip well for good service. Just because these people have money, does not mean they have good manners or class. And you can pretty much not count Europeans in this tipping category because in Europe, the wait staff’s salary is included as part of the price – so tipping to Europeans is going above and beyond for them. A lot of them do not know how servers are paid in the US. As far as the autograt goes – on the menu it normally says that a gratuity of 18-20% will be added to parties of 6 or more. As a former server, I let the guests know that and if they would prefer to tip of their own volition, then I will not add that. If they are cheap then, either they are REALLY cheap, or you suck as a waiter.
Sorry, when Amex gives you 30 million to smile and look at the camera,no argument works.I can attest to Tiger. He came to my resto/bar with friends b4 he was married.Left $3 on a $50 round of drinks.
All I know is Michael Jordan bought a lot of drinks for two floors full of customers he didn’t know from Adam at a place I used to frquent in DC… and did it frequently, then left to go upstairs to the “members” section
Babs, Penn, Moore, Madge……so much for the “support” of the working class! These cheap floor-flushers are nothing but a bunch of two-faced mutts!
As a server for 10 + yrs, I would absolutly love to make a higher wage per hour so I didnt have to depend on people to make my money! And so sorry but 10% is not acceptable!!! You have someone to cater to your every whim. No matter what you want, your server is there for you. If you dont want to leave a tip, then go through the drive thru!!! Dont go into a sit down establishment where you are catered to!! Now if your server did not do their job then it is acceptable to tip below 15%. I pride myself on making sure my guests never have to ask for a refill and always have what they want in a timely fashion. Also wanted to say that even if we dont get a tip on a table we still have to tip our bartender and bussers and sometimes food runner and THEN we still have to claim a percentage of that and pay taxes on it!!!!! So once again……..YOU DONT WANT TO TIP…..GO TO MCDONALDS!!!!!
Here’s the deal – at most restaurants, the servers make minimum wage or often far less, because it has become the social norm that service workers are tipped some percentage of the total bill. Most people know this. In states that pay less than minimum wage, service and hospitality lobbyists have pushed for bills that allow employers to pay even less.
What you might not know is that most servers MUST tip co-workers and ALL servers must claim a minimum of 8% of total sales to the IRS, which is then taxed. Claim less, get an audit.
At my place, I give the bartender 15% of your bar bill (for drinks and appetizers before you’re seated), 4% of all other sales go to the house (hosts, bussers, etc), plus I always pay taxes on at least 8% (shave off 2% more).
For example, if you get $50 worth of drinks and food from the bar, order $100 at the table, and tip 10% = $15, I get a whopping $1.50. Tip 20% = $30 and I get 16.50. Tip nothing, thanks, I just lost $13.50.
A lot of people are totally uninformed as to how and why to tip, thought I might spell it out for those who still feel it’s “optional”.
Bottom line is 20% is standard, it’s what most people tip, and a little extra money spent at the end of an enjoyable evening is a worthwhile investment. I’ve spent the whole time gauging how you want to be treated, what you like, and what will make you happy. How about returning the favor?
Okay, let me start off by saying that if a celebrity doesnt tip who, it’s no different than getting stiffed by a non-celebrity. You have to earn a tip to receive it. Yeah, people may be stingy, and they may nit tip as much as YOU would like, but say Britney Spears was waiting on you, are you going to stiff her because she is famous and already has a good bit of money? I am a waitress, and I know for a fact that you have to earn what you make, you should be grateful for what they do give you. Whether they gave you $3 or $300 just because they make the big bucks doesnt mean they should have to leave you big bucks.
I like the thought that buying a $300 bottle of wine does not entitle you for a $60 tip process. These celebs are practically normal people and shouldn’t be held accountable for your Saturday night fun. Also theres no way to tell how horrible and outlandish the service was and what may have been taken as ignorance when it was only a humble opinion. Either way none of them over paid celebrities are at fault for their discrestionary cheepness. I believe again its the filthy corporate ladder and are faulty system
Them celebs even though they got money waddin out there aces should be much much much… much much more generous. Bottom line is they dont have to and you aint got the ground to stand on to tell them what they should do. Lucky strike with a big tip and polish work practices with a small one. Hee he
So what! who cares if they don’t tip. Maybe they thought it wasn’t very good being waitered by who ever waitered them. maybe when Regis and his wife were being served and waitered on, the people had a very bad attitude or something. Tell me you never tipped bad on something!
I know for a fact Brittany Spears and her mama dont tip.Ive waited on them. When they come home to kentwood they expect to be treated like royalty and keep you running but wont leave a tip.No one here wants to wait on them.Wonder if they noticed the food tasted a little different.
For the one who asked how the Dog could spend $250 at TGI Friday’s in Waikiki—have you seen his wife???? Enough said there! I think the troubling thing here is that many of these so called “celebs” tout themselves to be champions of the “common man” (ie Penn, Dog, P Diddy, Jesse Jackson, John Kerry etc)…yet the apparently have forgotten how to be NICE to or reward the common man in their desire to be divas!! I would not necessairly expect a huge $150 tip on a $300 meal, but I would expect from someone who is worth millions to tip a reasonable amount for the effort given, maybe $50 instead of $7, especially if I was made to wait on their every whim, take food back, deliver extra services etc like I was their personal slave rather than having 10 other tables to wait on also! There have been other reports that Striesand is a nightmare to be around when she is out shopping or eating. People are no longer people around her but slaves to be used and abused.
I think the idea of a 20% tip is stupid. Look, you go out to eat, not throw money at the staff. I’ve had car-hops hang around like they wanted money for bringing my SMALL take-out order just to the curb, at Sonic! — What, 5 steps, and they’re waiting for money like a rich kid w/ rich parents? Hey, if someone “works their tail off”, is courteous, does well, etc. I like giving a generous tip — they deserve it, especially on a large meal! I just don’t think tipping should be a form of welfare. Tipping used to be meaningful, a reward rather than a compulsion. For busy people without lots of money & have to eat on the go alot, big tips every night isn’t affordable; but, you still have to eat. You just can’t give everything out as freebies. For rich people, I think a sorry tip on a huge, expensive meal is garbage. Even poor people try to appreciate the hard work of wait-staff. My idea is that if I ever wonder about my tip, I’d like to give a little more to make sure they aren’t angry or saddened by me being cheap : I’d rather leave them happy than be a cheap-skate — hey, what’s a little more to make a difference in how they feel, for the better?
You people that “think” waitressing or being a waiter is easy, YOU have obviously never been one. It is one of the hardest jobs in the world and sometimes with little or no compensation! I worked as a waitress/bartender for over 10 years. I never had any real big celebraties, but I would have done the same, I would have put their cheap names out there had they done me like that! They put their pants on the same way that we do those cheap jerks! Like you said, maybe we shouldn’t pay the exuberant ticket/concert, cd, etc. prices to see them either!
Why is race being brought into this discussion? You people are ridiculous…and if you don’t like what people are tipping you, take up a trade or get a degree.

Hey “Rev. Jim” – You don’t sound like much of a Rev, but you do sound like an angry misogynist.
Rev. Jim { 04.28.08 at 7:05 pm } Here’s a few more.
I drove a cab in and around Philly from the late 60’s to the early 70’s and never remember receiving a tip from an American negro. Don’t know if it was because they were poor or just hated whitey, but I never forgot it and never will although it doesn’t affect what I tip them when one waits on me. I depended on those tips back in the day, and always tip at least 20% as long as the service is basically satisfactory. The Streisand and Madonna scum are just basically across the board fecal creatures who respect little outside their “bubble” world.
i was a waiter for about 20 years and i made good money, the one thing that i can say is that there are alot of bad tippers out there but for every ahole that doesnt tip well there are people that over tip. so it evens out in the end. ive always made good money some days better than others but everyday cant be great waiting on tables is an ok job over all but i do believe that the gov should up the min wage for servers 2.65 just isnt right. and ive heard of some places that fired servers for not claiming enough tips, that really sucks like hell, and for FEDUP i dont believe that you used to wait tables because the one thing that servers hate is for someone to say there job is not a “REAL JOB” servers work as hard or maybe harder than anyone believe that
Notice they’re all die hard liberals to boot…. Apparently the democratic slogan “change” was taken literally. LOL!!
… and I ALWAYS give 20%.
I always tip at least 20% no matter whether it’s a family style restaurant or fine dining. If the wait person is great then they get more. While I can possibly see having to share a small % with the bus person I don’t see why they have to share tips with a host/ess. They do nothing for the patron except walk them to the table.
Not to start an argument but the % has definitely changed over the years (due to inflation I’m sure). Once 10% was good then it was 15%, then 18% (the current auto-gratuity) and now 20% is the expected norm.
In most places I can understand that but in the state where I live the waiters/waitresses do make minimum wage ($8.40) + tips. I still tip at least 20%. I know it’s a hard job that I sure don’t want to do. I can’t even remember a time when I had a waiter who didn’t deserve a tip. I’ve found that if you just be nice and treat your wait person like a human you will get good service.
Granted I am no celebrity but I myself always try and leave 15 percent to 25 percent when I can, as I know how hard the staff works and how low they are paid. Not all celebrities have money, some times they are over extended to maintain that allure of being rich and famous and are in between projects. Image is everything in Entertainment.
I always leave a tip & have taught my kids to do so too. If you dont have the money for a tip, you dont have th emoney to dine out!
In Texas its easy to calculate a tip. tax is 8.75%, just double the tax & its a 17%
Lebron James doesn’t tip and when He does, Its like $5.00 on a $250.00 meal and I got proof!!
Frank Sinatra use to say about some Hollywood folks, and he knew many of them. You Can’t BuyClass.
If i waited on someone and they tipped me a few bucks for busting my rear end. First off I would spit on them cuss them out challenge them to a fight and quit the job. Or i would wait until they came in again and go to the bathroom have a bowel movement and make sure it was mixed into their food. I have never worked as a waiter or waitress even if i had too because of assholes like this. And for a special bonus i would houck a lougie and mix it right in as well. This is no joke. So everyone out there do the same if you encounter people like this maybe one day they will get the hint.
Don Henley tips 15% and made this list… what’s wrong with this picture. That’s an appropriate tip, unless the server did something spectacular. Server’s expectations are too high… food service is a job, not a career.
I see many people on this forum have a problem with celebrities and or regular customers who don’t tip. I think that a person should tip: 1. if they want to and 2. If the service is outstanding and they want to. Just because a person has more money than another does not mean they should have to tip when they go out to eat, gamble or whatever if they don’t want to. The company you work for is the one you chose to apply at. I have been to restaurants where the tip is included in parties of 6 or more and the service was terrible. Nevertheless, the tip was still collected and on top of that the waiter still wanted me to leave a tip on the table. If I were to give that kind of service at the job I work, I would be written up and put on PIP (Personal Improvement Program) and if there was no improvement…out the door. I decided when I went to work that I wanted to be paid for the work I did. I looked at the company and talked to people who worked there to get a feel of what the payscale was and what the position required. If it did not suit my needs and or skills I did not apply for the position. I did not go in expecting to be tipped on what my position required me to do. When all parties involved ie., waitstaff and customers alike decide to stand firm on the restaurant business and change the way the pay is handled then you will see real changes but until then, things will stay the same. The business of spitting in customers food or drinks or short changing them when they win at gambling because they did not tip what you expected them to is nasty and illegal. If you are caught I pray that you get everything you deserve.
what??? i would say they all are fucking cheap bustards. i always leave at least 20% of tips.. i can see that most of those high maintainance celebs who make the most money are always cheap on tipping.. fuck them all, thats why i dont really admire the celebrities very much!!
Parked cars in college, in Phoenix at high-end restuarant…one night Bob Goldwater (Barry’s brother) and Bob Hope came in for dinner…as they were leaving brought up Goldwater’s car…everyone jumped in to go…Bob Hope looks at me holding the door and asks Goldwater, “Did to catch the carhop?” Goldwater replied don’t worry about it, it’s not necessary (to him maybe!). Hope reaches into his pocket and hands me a quarter. I hold it in the palm of my hand, staring down at it like it was a turd and say, “Gee, thanks, Bing” and walk away. Never looked back, don’t know if he heard or got it, don’t care…that was 40 years ago and I’m still angry!
since when isn’t a tip automatically added into any restaurant bill when it reaches a certain limit or the party is a certain size — this is the way it is at every restaurant I go to. Frogman it has nothing to do with being an artist. Any human being that dines out and receives good service and food should leave a decent tip.
Ozzy & his band came to a bar I worked at several years ago when he was drinking heavily. Not so much as a penny was left as a tip!
Japan Australia and other countries you don’t have to tip. I don’t see a need to tip when everyone is getting payed to do a job already. I just come more often if the service is good allowing store or cafe to make more money then giving bigger bonus at the end of year to staff.
Only cheap people have a problem with tipping…’News Flash’ an average tip (for good service) in the millineum plus (it’s 2009 people) is 18-20%. If you don’t agree with the system “Eat at Home”. If everyone worked in the service industry for just 6 mths. your attitude would be so different. People that are always expecting perfection out of others can’t produce it theirselves. Remember: you pay for your food, you tip b/c of the service.
Most of the people if not all are left wing snobs that tell you what to do and help the less fortunate. I have no doubt in my mind that every statement above is true. Because everyone that listens to them empowers them.
Waiters and waitresses work very hard and most of them are very good and very pleasant. I can see if they are rude, then they don’t deserve a tip. With all of the money these celebrities make it is ashame that they don’t tip like they should. Some of them forget that they were waiters and waitresses before they became famous. How soon they forget! Shame on you for being so low!!! I am not a famous person, but I tip very well!!!!
At the restaurant I work at we have to tip out 5% of our sales for the night to tip out the hosts, bussers, and bartenders…If your bill is $100 and yu only leave 10 which is %10 then I only get $5 for busting my behind getting everything that you want…%15 should be given unless the service is bad…Oprah is wrong when she says it is ok to tip only %10 if you want to save money…And for every person that is whiney and needy and wants their server by their side the entire time they are there and then dont tip…I think they should have to be made to serve people exactly like them and see how it feels to make no money.
I was always taught, regardless of the situation, it is always better to act with class. Always be kind to your waitress/waiter, bellmen, or woman, housecleaner, nanny, hairdresser, etc. Which includes a generious tip, salary etc. It makes me feel better to act kindly towards others…not because of who they are, but because of who I am.
I know democrats and republicans who are very, very bad tippers and they are liberals!!!
first off whoever said we are asking for hand outs has never been a server. it is the only service provided that a person does not have to pay for….. can i go into a mechanic and say i am only paying for the parts….. i am not going to pay you for your labor… i don’t think so…it is the same principle here…. don’t go out if you can’t afford to leave a good tip…… not everyone tips on service…. they tip what the flippin feel like tipping, i have had seperate checks on a table and one person tipped 20% & the other tipped 10% they got the same damn service….. so y the difference in tipping?
Tired of all you who debate the need to tip. Bottom line–you tip at minimum 15% on a restaurant bill always. If service is good feel free to raise it to 20-25%. If service is bad, bring it up to the manager. I don’t care if you presonally think tipping is stupid, if you think restaurants should pay higher salaries, etc, etc. It is what it is.
And this especially goes for all you Europeans who think the American system is stupid, and think tipping is optional. It isn’t optional, it’s how we do it, and if you don’t like it stay in Europe. I don’t like paying $10/bottle water or for bread as is customary in France, but I do. I don’t like having to pay more to drink my espresso at a table outside rather than inside, but I do in Italy as is required. And I dont like paying 15+% VAT so you can have nationalized health care, but I do.
Fred Schnieder of the B-52s tips $2, no matter what the tab is.
I’m a day late on this comment, but to vozman above…I was taxed on the amount of the bills-so sorry, your crap doesn’t float. The restaurant I worked at was high end and 95% of the time the tips were spot on or great. There were several situations where I was stiffed…but, I got burned two times and found my way out of the mess. Commonly the IRS will assume you made 8% of your total sales as tips and will withhold you accordingly. This is how I fixed my situation-I simply realized that I could tell who was going to stiff me and simply applied autograt…if the party was too small, low cost, or they had requested I avoid autograt, as I’d walk away from the table I would simply walk up to the “primary”…whomever paid the bill, and say “Excuse me MR/MRS—, there is one more signature I need on the cheque. If you could simply sign your name at the bottom of this cheque next to your amount of tip, I’d appreciate it.” Some will ask why and I would explain that the IRS taxes me on a percentage of the total bill and if you dont sign, the IRS will think that I made a tip of (looking at the total and pulling 15-20% off the top of my head) x#$…this signature will let accounting know the real tip you gave me so I don’t get railed come tax time! I’ve had a few simply get embarrassed and hand me cash, a coupl of them signed the cheque while diners and their entourage giggled at the embarrassment it created, and I had one lady, a local actress of mediocre talent, who got somewhat offended. I then told the poor daft soul “…that would be like you paying taxes on the money you earned from the movie the Titanic…” “…but I wasn’t in the Titanic…” “…oh, that’s right…”
love your work if you do that you don’t have to expect from these people petty tips.
Americans are too hung up on tipping. In Europe, you just round up. 10% is decent. Why do you deserve more? Usually, you get a wage as well. I don’t see why bringing food and drinks to people entitles you to high compensation. It requires the intelligence of a street sweeper or “sandwich artist”.
I cant believe that some of the people dont leave tips, its usually a member of there entourage that pays the bill and they stiff the waiter because they pocket the money, Also just because you work at a nice restaurant and stuff dont think you deserve a tip because most of the time the service is shitty because the staff assumes on getting a nice tip. Also all you waiter who work at a 6 party or more automatic gratuity think that just because your going to get a tip anyways you dont have to be attentive and a great host so fuck off all you people
I wait tables for 2 reasons, the hours let me be at home at nite to be a mother to my children. As well as I like what I do. Bad tippers are just that bad tippers. And all you bad tippers we DO REMEMBER who YOU are. We fight over who ISN’T going to wait on your cheap asses!! But at the end of the day, working only 25-30 hrs a week I make close to what you make in 40hrs. I have people who will not eat at my restaurant if i’m not there because I do my job very well & these people take very good care of me, they always remember me on my birthday & holidays. That compensation bought me a new flat screen T.V. However I do deal with the cheapos & it’s very disheartening when you do everything right & they tip crappy. Demanding, rude, & people with rude children are the worst tippers. But what most people do not really understand is ALL the work that we do behind the scenes that our company does not compensate us for. There is more to waiting tables than just serving food. Making sure we have ice for your soda, clean plates for your food, clean glasses for your drinks, who do you think polishes that silverware that you eat off at 2.13 an hour. So you not only tip on service , but all the little things that go into making your dining experience better. I as a waitress try to give you a great dining experience. You would not get the same treatment in my home . So next time you go out to eat don’t just look at the bill or the server, but remember all the rest of the things we do so that you may have a nice dinner prepared & served to you so that you don’t have to do it yourself . All you bad tippers you just make it worse on yourselves when you go out, you get BAD service because the wait staff knows you’re a BAD TIPPER.
In regards to Cheaptastic’s comment. You are a moron. You expect someone to “shut up and serve” without being compensated for their work. It is easy to make ridiculas comments regarding a form of work that you have obviously never been a part of. I believe that this list is ridiculas, but seriously why would anyone work for nothing!
I should also add Lori Morgan & Reba McIntyre as horrible tippers. I graduated college debt free because of serving so I can’t say that servers don’t make money because most servers do very well for the hours worked. Where I worked 18% was added to parties of 8 or more, at the managers discreation. A server doesn’t take home all of the money that they have made. There are other positions that require tips from the server, the bartender 2-5% of total sales/bar sales, the busser 2-8% of total sales, expo min. $2, host 2-5% oof total sales, so a server is only leaving with 8-20% less then what you cheapos tipped. Give servers a reak they work hard for everyone that is too lazy to cook for themselves. I agree that “minorities” are horrible tippers if they tip at all. Anyone in the industry knows that get over it. Very rarly have I been surprised by a good tip from a “minority” it is just a knownfact. If you get less perect service then you fell into the stereotype, too bad if your offeded. Prove that server wrong that is the best way to get back at the cold hard truth. As for “celebrities” they should not be treated any better then the cute couple dressed in jeans and t-shirts.
I’ll add 3 more to this list…..
1. Tori Amos. I waited on her back in the 90’s (yea its been a long time) and this woman is CHEAP! She barely left 10% and she could never talk directly to me but rather had her “man” at the time do the talking, and he was rude!
2. Reggie Bush. Running back for the New Orleans saints. A friend of mine has a friend who works at Mortons of chicago (this particular restaurant though was in new orleans) and reggie along with Kim Kardashian came in one night and dined and of course had to be waited on hand and foot, and at the end of the night left such a BAD tip, that the manager of the restaurant actually stepped in and gave the waiter money. Talk about pathetic and lame!
3. Barbara streisands cousin. I dont remember her name, but I waited on her in the 90’s also. She had a table of about 8 and she was so demanding, so rude, so disgusting that she even had her guests at the table upset at her. Anyway, they ordered drinks and appetizers…I served the drinks and went to check on my other tables afterwards. As I’m walking back she demands to know where are the appetizers. At this point I’m furious and I say “you just ordered them barely 5 minutes ago” and she did not like that answer. Anyway, time passed and the appetizers are served, but she does not like them, nor does she want the entree she ordered. In other words she just all of a sudden changes her mind. So she says cancel everything and they are leaving. I GLADLY cancel everything, I bring the check for the drinks and apps, and luckily someone else in her party picked up the tab and did leave me a good tip. BUT that was beside the point. There was NO reason for this woman to be rude or mean at all! She just though she was such a diva (for whatever reason) that she had to be waited on hand and foot!
I am a waiter and had the opportunity to wait on Whitney Houston once. I must say she was not very chatty cathy, but very professional acting…when asked if she would like more tea…she would reply, “please” and “thank you.” Very professional, but on a 240 bill…she left me a tip well over $240 dollars….I Will Always Love her, lol
I would like to add that Tiger Woods is a arrogant @$$. He lives 5 minutes from me on Jupiter Island and I have passed him in the club house many times, he is always rude, even to children,a 8 year old young lady said “hello mr woods” to him one day and he glared at her so rudely, couldnt even say hello. And no he does not tip well either as I have heard from many of the staff. He thinks he is so much better then everyone, an over-rated golfer???? HA.
I worked in a breakfast and lunch place in Sarasota, FL. The avg tip I made a person was about 2 dollars. Luckily it was a very busy restaurant so I really didn’t do bad. I made my money by turning the table so I really ran my butt off. We had bussers and hosts that we tipped out but we were still expected to seat, serve and buss our own tables.
One thing that really bothered me about serving was the attitude people had towards servers. Most of us girls that worked there were paying our ways through college. Also, unfortunately, we all ran each others food so if it was taken out wrong my tip was punished for it. First of all I wrote the order down correctly, second of all I did all I could do to make it right and make my customer happy and lastly I do not think I should be punished because the cook screwed it up. I do not cook the food. Most people know that if you complain you can get your food comped. It’s not fair to take it out of the server’s tip! We did all we could do to make your visit as pleasant as possible and we should be compensated. I also don’t think it’s fair to leave a bad tip because the restaurant isn’t up to par to your standards. Just because you are very particular about where you choose to eat doesn’t mean that you should tip your server less even though they gave you great service. Look, I know when I didn’t give my all to a table for whatever reason and I don’t expect them to give me a great tip but I also don’t expect a bad tip. I also had many tables that would run me back and forth when I am obviously extremely busy because are on an hour wait and then tip $5 for a six person table. I could understand if i was not prompt in my return but most of the times I was. Another peeve of working in a place like this was that we would have customers that would camp out for two hours or more after they were done and still would tip 15% off the bill. Yes I understand that I didn’t do anything for you after you were done eating but nobody takes in consideration that I could have turned that table atleast 2 more times and made threes times what you left me.
I know that my restaurant experience is a lot different from most of the people posting but my point is that many of the customers don’t understand, care, nor have consideration for their servers no matter where you are. It was only breakfast but I working in one of the richest areas in Sarasota and I understand when the customers think that they are better than you and expect your constant attention without giving me any respect or compensation for my service. I used to be a very naive girl before I started working in restaurants but it taught me a lot about Americans and myself. Americans are so spoiled these days and if they don’t get what they want you better watch out. It’s sad how little compassion people have for others anymore. I could never treat anyone how I have been treated sometimes by some customers. It is hard to imagine how in anyone in the customer service industry can keep a good attitude anymore. Reading some of these postings is very disheartening to me. All we ask for is understanding.
I grew up in the food business ,working for my folks . At nineteen I worked for other restuarant owners . I agree with the servers who have commented here . There is no more physically demanding job than waiting on people in a busy establishment . The drink runs, the salad making which is usually left to the waitor unless there is an expeditor to do it. The other tables coming in and wanting there drink order taken promptly. The runs back and forth for more drinks and putting up with bus boys that don’t keep the butter plates and water glasses full , which does affect your service . They shouldn’t deserve anything , in my opinion but minumum wage . Waitors do the majority of the work in miles on their feet . Those who think that 10% is acceptable are crazy . Also those from eu who have commented . Are you talking 7 to 10 pecent in American money when your dollar is worth double ours ? You deserve anything that happens to your food . If you can’t afford to tip stay home and make your worthless wife cook because you obviously can’t afford to act rich . As for the cheap skates I have put up with , and being a successful bussiness owner now . You don’t want to run in to me in a restuarant unless you want to be exposed publicly for the cheap bums you are .
Just because someone has money doesn’t mean they should have to tip out the ass. If I had millions of dollars, I still wouldn’t give huge tips. Those on the list that don’t tip AT ALL, deserve to be on the list… if the service was good. Because I’ve been to a TGI Fridays where I didn’t leave a tip because the waitress was inattentive and rude, and the food tasted like sh*t. There are extenuating circumstances that we don’t know about.
hey fed up what UAW workers are you referring to? if you can afford to spend money at a restaurant, then you can afford to tip for good service, just plain and simple, no matter you are. Alot of those who work in eating establishments are college students working their way through school or single parents trying to take care of their kids. If you are unsure of what to give, like I was at one time, ask the hostess or a member of managment. Don’t be a CHEAPO!
I tip. But frankly it is getting out of control. It doesn’t feel like a tip – it feels more like a tax. I love to tip for good service – polite, attentive, efficient… Should I have to tip for rude, slow, and minimal service???? I would hope not but somehow that is becomng the norm. You have to tip no matter what!
The tip system in america isnt flawed becuase of big business or cheap tippers, its corrupt from the simple fact that doing anything for 2.15 an hour is ludicrous… shameful even. I would love to see american waiters Unionize the crap out of the food service industry.
I’ve read a number of lists of bad celeb tippers and while some celebs seem to fit that label hands-down, I have to question why those who leave 15% are grouped with those who leave nothing or almost nothing. If customers are demanding and the staff works hard to satisfy them, they should leave more than 15%, but we should also remember that celebs tend to dine at expensive restaurants, and 15% of a large bill is still a good take.
First, I am SO happy Pierce Brosnan is not on this list! (He used to be.) Maybe he learned his lesson. Secondly, I personally tip 15% for normal service and 20% for very good service. I have gone 25%. (And I’m pretty poor.) Thirdly, I don’t think Paul McCartney should be on here for missing a tip one time for being drunk. Gee, I wonder how many of us have screwed up AT LEAST once when we were plowed?
Dog the bounty hunter? OMG what a loser the guy and his fat ass wife only has a low loser cable show and they think they are that great and famous give me a break..as for the others including Sean Penn, they all need to grow up, needless to say they dont know what hard work is…
whats good is that there are plenty of people on here that do tip. It make me sick that people on here are talking about servers feeling that they deserve the tip….they do! they work hard. These actors are paid so well they should realize if someone works for you they should be compensated for it. If you have money for a $300 dollar of wine then I would hope that you have class and tip $60 on that same bottle! wow now I am angry.
Hm, I notice the top worst tippers are the most rich or have been in the business longer. Goes to show you how many celebrities forget their roots. It’s sad.
Thanks so much for this list I will go out of my way to not watch their movies or buy their music . I work as a pizza delivery driver because although im a certified EMT have 12 years manufacturing exp it was the only job avalable . So I know all about cheap tippers . And my standards are as follow over 15 % or more I will get you your food first and you might get free stuff cokes bread sticks esc,15 % to 10% you will get it in order it was recieved . 10% to 1% im taking my time . And if you don’t tip I will make sure it is cold and that might not be all that happens to it . Just use you imagination . So tip your pizza delivery drivers well , we drive miles to bring you your food unlike waiters who walk feet
You have got to be kidding me, frogman. You must be a moron. Waiters work for tips, that’s standard. You eat, you get good service? Then you tip. You get above average service, you leave an above average tip. If not, you deserve an asskicking.
Not tipping is ghetto. It’s what people do when they can’t afford it. It makes sense that all of these rich people just have money, they have no brains. They were obviously not brought up right.
It’s important. Someone who does something for you deserves a tip – whether they expect it or not. If you’re one who doesn’t tip, do the rest of us a favor and go jump off a bridge. I don’t care how rich or famous you are, you don’t disrespect people by not tipping them. I can’t blame people for spitting in the food. I would too.
Nobody Should Tip: After 3 months of no tipping, all waiter/es will quit, restaurant will close, and congress will pass law regulate the industry and raise your wage.
If you are in the service industry and plan to make this as your career than you must be regulated, just as nurses, construction workers, paralegals, and realtor. As professional you will be compensated accordingly.
You can’t have it both ways: no formalize training nor certification and demanding a salary that fit for head of household.
I’m sorry for this third world point of view, but somehow I see tipping is demeaning.
Poor tippers or very cheap ones like you have mentioned above always suffer a greater losses for the tip they denied people. How can Jesse Jackson become president, or Paul Macarteny not lose millions to a woman he calls wife a divorce settlement when they do not tip. There is no vacum in life and nature does not allow it.
I cannot believe those celebrities are stingy enough not to give a higher TIPS, GOD will surely punish them. $5, $10 $? Ridiculuos!
EOO-Philippines
I LOVED the comments made by KITTY BABY. My mother raised my brother, sister, and myself by waiting tables. So I grew up seeing just how hard she worked for her money and I am willing to bet my ass that most of the people on the above list do not work as hard. Seriously, how hard is it to work 3 or 4 months out of the year filming a movie and collect a $20+ million paycheck? Are you expected to tip well only because you make a lot of money and you are famous? Hell YES! The Bible even states, ‘To whom much is given, much is expected.’ If you can afford that $300 bottle of wine, you can certainly afford the $60 tip. That is basic! As for Europeans, my mother worked near LAX and she hated the tourists and the European plane attendants. They are extremely demanding, don’t say please or thank you and don’t tip. The flight attendants especially are rude and think they are above the wait staff. They are too stupid to realize they do the same thing, serve people, only difference is they do it on a plane. Don’t get me started on irresponsible, lazy-ass parents who don’t teach their children to behave or manners! If your child makes a mess, either clean it up yourself or tip extra for that! Your waitress/waiter is not a babysitter or referee! If the service is bad I leave %15, everyone is entitled to have a bad day. If the service is great OR I am with a big party, I encourage a min %20 tip. If you are not a good tipper I don’t want to be your friend, I will not go out with you, I do not want to be seen with you. In my humble opinion, you either don’t have any class, or are too much of a narcissist to consider any one else. Either way, don’t want to know you. It doesn’t matter whether tipping is right or wrong in your opinion, that is what is expected when you go to a restaurant. If you don’t like it, keep your cheap ass home! PLEASE!
If the waiter comes to your table only a couple of times, doesn’t refill your bevs, serves the food cold, is slow with getting your condiments, is rude, etc then fine, if you can’t give the person the benefit of the doubt then leave your cheap little tip, but remember that these are the people that make sure you get a sanitary, hot, disease free meal. If you stiff a waiter that gave you great service you are a cheap bastard, thats just how you roll. No, your not Hitler, but you will definitely do your fair share of pissing people off.
People don’t realize that waiters at most places tip out the bar, buss, and expo according to their sales meaning that if you leave 5 dollars on a 100 dollar bill then that waiter may actually be LOSING money by waiting on your table.
In reference to the article, I waited on Kevin Conolly from Entourage and he left me 30 on 110 bill. Really nice guy too!
I read several times that with wages at 2.40 the establishment is expecting customers to pay servers wages. I, also, live in one of the very low wage states. This low wage is for tipped employees only and it is NOT up to the establishment…these are STATE wages! I actually lived in one state that paid NO wages…your tips were your wages. Totally unfair to the workers AND to the customers who are expected to pick up the slack.
There are some states that have instituted paying tipped employees minimum wage plus tips. That, however, is not the norm. The bar and restaurant owner’s lobby works at the city, state, and federal levels to ensure their profits and to keep from paying their employees a decent wage. There are few unions for tipped employees and they hold little weight or power in most of the country. If employers started paying their tipped employees an adequate wage, it would result in higher menu prices for the customers. Owners would offset the added expense by passing the buck to the customer. This has apparently not occured to some of you. In bygone days of this country, the mailman, garbage collector, the gardener, grocery store clerk and anyone else who provided service for you were given a monetary gift for Christmas. It was proper manners then just as it is now. The same premise goes for tipping. Sadly, from what I have read from these posts, the way of manners is gone. For those of you who disapprove of tipping, consider this. What would happen if we took it a step further and decided not to pay labor to the mechanic who works on our cars, the technician who services our home repairs, the accountant who does our taxes, the doctors and nurses who repair us… Somewhere down the line this view would directly affect the income of every employed worker in this country. As a former and perhaps future tipped employee, I see no difference in the latter as with the former. When you go out to eat, take a taxi, or go to a bar, part of the cost of that evening is the gratuity. If you want poor, inefficient service from uncaring and unqualified people, continue in the belief that tipping is not neccessary. Eventually everyone who is exceptional in the service industry will leave and this is what will be left. Don’t take my word for it. Look at past history. Just a few decades ago, every community had a butcher who not only was well versed in his job but also happily helped his clients with their needs. Go to your average corporate supermarket now and see if the service is the same as it was in the 70’s. The days of Sam the butcher as an integral feature of the community have past. Regretfully, this is just a glimpse of the demise of the service industry. Everyone wants something for nothing nowadays and expects million dollar service for minescule cost.
To little to even care -
Nice political dig at Bill Cosby.
Here’s one for you:
How about you get a real job and stop living off your parents “welfare”!
I worked at a restaurant in the early 1990s when Michael Bivens of Bell Biv Devoe brought his family after a college graduation. The entire party was outstanding, and he pulled each one of the staff that worked that party aside and gave us a $50 bill (I was just a busser at the time, there were five total staff members waiting on the party); above and beyond the gratuity that was already added to his bill.
Later, I waited on Tony Dorsett of Dallas Cowboys fame when he was in town for Hall of Fame week here in Canton. That multi-millionaire signed a bar napkin, which was apparently my only tip of the evening.
if this story is true these celebrities should realy be ashamed!!! even if gratitude is already included they still should leave a tip waiters get paid like $3.00 an hr and put up with all types of shit and for someone who makes millions!!!!!!! and half there shit is free anyways thats just crazy i hope this is a fake story becuz if its true then i have lost respect for many of these actors who i may add or not b or c they are a acters im no were near rich and even when i got a chillies with a group of 4 we tip like $20 on a $50 bill i would never leave a $3 tip espicaly in a nice resturant if this story is true and these waiters are not being tiped properly they should all realy go on strike and lets see how these a stars get there food and there faces should be put all over the web and tv so they can be embaressed infront the whole world
I usually don’t care what celeb’s do. They are all a bunch of stuck up assholes anyway. Regardless if any of this is true, I would still love to sucker punch every single celebrity on this list.
I’ve eaten at the TGI Fridays in Waikiki. If they treated Dog and his wife the way they treated my husband and I then they deserve the tip they got. The servers at that location are so use to dealings with tourists that they slam them through their meal so they can turn the table over. They focus on volume rather than on quality of service.
It’s sad to hear people defending alot of these Artist, first off READ the papers or watch some of there reality shows you’ll see for yourself how fame has made them spoiled brats. If you go out to eat and expect people to wait on you hand and foot you should be kind enough to pay them for there services, how is that a hand out?
Also people are saying tipping is an option not a necessary, I don’t see how you came up with that idea. The last time I checked when you go out to eat your paying for your meal and the person serving you and taking your order isn’t part of your meal they are there to assist you with ordering packing up your left overs and dealing with your children. The least you can do is pay them a little something for their assistance! I guess some people are just to ignorant to see a hard worker standing in front of them. I’m not saying every waiter or waitress has earned a huge tip but it’s not easy being on your feet all day and dealing with multiple personalities.
First off, most of you are ignorant morons who don`t have a clue what you`re talking about.
The FACT is, servers in 99% of American Restaurants make a SUPER-TINY hourly wage, so calling tips handouts and saying that the servers should be `happy` to get `whatever` is asinine!!!
Do some research, you idiots, or better yet, don`t. Keep being shitty to servers and posting crap like this, maybe someone will return the favor by adding something special to your next meal!!
Idiots…
For anyone who thinks that it is part of the job and that the restaurant should pay the wait staff more, that is a great idea. How about we just and 20% to every item on the menu, then you won’t have to feel like you have to tip because it is in the price already. The reason that foreign people don’t tip, is because they get it in their wage. As a server in the US, you make $2.65 per hour and need to have the 20% to make a living wage. There are also a number of hours that are spent doing prep work where you do not make anything in tips. QUIT BEING CHEAP!!!!
im working in a cruise ship as a waiter, most of the waiter noticed that almost all english people doesnt pay their gratuities in the cruise ship during their stay. and if they pay a tip its very less to think that the waitstaff serve them for 7, 9, or even 12 days cruise and they pay only like $10-$20. but they need to pay the gratuties for $2.5 a night for the asst.waiter $3.5/night for the waiter so what they do they just pay $10-$20 cash in the envelop and sometimes they are in a big group, so it is a very less tip for the waitstaff and we just only depending on a tipping salary. hope this will be a learn to the people who do a cruising how to appreciate the service of the the waitstaff. thnks..
Just a tip for those of you that don’t tip…. don’t eat at the same place twice…. “don’t tip eat spit”…. guaranteed you treat wait staff poorly or frequent a place (even upscale) and don’t tip…. you’ll be lucky if all that is added to your order is spit… others involve nose picking, and other more inconspicuous additions…. personally I would never do this but I have seen it done in many places I have worked…
Working with the public is very demanding. If you have the money then tip a little more than what is expected of you. Everybody can use a few extra bucks in their pockets. Waiters and waitresses depend on their tips because the pay sucks! Two people you might not want to upset is a person handling your food and a nurse handling your pain medicines (lol).
Add Ben Gazzara to this list. Though not an A Lister for decades, he and his wife have been “dining out” on his rep on the Upper East Side for years. An absolute horror to wait on, he demands things, he never asks or requests. When he does pay his own check it almost never approaches 10%.
A real dick………….
I think it is funny that many of the people on the list are card carrying democrats-the political party that supposedly supports the working man(Michael Moore, John Kerry, etc.)!! Shows how much respect they have for those of us who can’t afford all the luxuries, but still leave 20%!
* Hourly wages are typically significantly less in the service industry, because tips are considered part of the servers income.
* Your server does pay income taxes. In absence of proper documentation of tips, the government will look at the servers food and beverage sales and base their taxable tip income on a percent of it. So if you do not tip the server, it has actually cost the server money to serve you. See the IRS tipping tax laws.
* Believe it or not, servers do not always get a paycheck. Sometimes, because of the taxes they pay and/or deductions, servers must pay in to the company rather than get a check.
* Servers do a lot of work that they are not tipped on also. It is called side work and it is work that is done for no more than their hourly rate. Side work usually involves cleaning the restaurant, stocking supplies and getting the store ready for the next shifts business. Side work can be time consuming and at times physically straining.
Don’t blame your server for things that aren’t his or her fault. If the chef or cooks made a mistake on your order, or you just didn’t like the food, keep in mind that your server did not cook the food. If your server performed well and served you well, use your discretion. While you are not expected to tip well for a meal you did not enjoy, ask yourself if it is really appropriate to dock the server’s expected compensation just because you didn’t like your food?
Keep in mind that servers must “tip out” other restaurant employees at the end of their shift. Some restaurants have policies where after “tipping out” a server is walking home with only a third of their tips. Tips are sometimes shared with bus boys and bartenders. Sometimes restaurant policy dictates tip outs to the kitchen, the hostess, the barista, the food runners, and the sommelier. Tipping out is based on the server’s overall sales (usually 1-4% of gross sales), whether they get tipped well or not. This means that if a high enough tip is not received, the server can end up PAYING to serve YOU.
Consider mitigating circumstances. Some restaurants may get very busy, especially on weekends. If service is good overall, but a little slower than normal, do keep in mind that there is a good chance that the server is a bit swamped with tables. Imagine being a server and having a table of 8 and two tables of 4 sit down at about the same time. It happens. That’s a lot of drinks and bread to bring out, and a lot of orders to take. It’s hard for one person to be in that many places at once. Try to be understanding about this
I keep reading and I have so much to say!
I won’t really address the comments made by teenagers playing around and deeply disturbed people, other than to say it’s kind of sad that so many would want to anonymously express their greedy, demeaning views.
And about celebrity tips, who cares, celebrity is so overblown in the US. If I was rich I would tip well over 20% for merely decent service since, why not? I can afford it! I always round up a couple bucks to make sure the tip is above 20% because, come on, what’s a few bucks? You may have just made their night get a lot better, and to me, that’s worth it. I enjoy making people happy.
I’m totally frugal with eating, clothing, you know – material possessions – most of my money from being a server (the modern term for waiter / waitress) goes right into my recording studio.
But way before I worked in the service industry I tipped well, because I was raised with manners and a concern for other people.
As a kid, when I took a date out to a nice restaurant, and all through college, I tipped 20%+ because I knew the standard was 15-20, and I figured it was kind of a crappy job.
Fast forward a few years, I’m currently doing what I want to do, building up a studio, working nights as a server to help fund it, and indeed, being a server IS A KIND OF CRAPPY JOB.
Don’t get me wrong, I really like the place I work, the food is great, amazing drinks, a fun staff, and we give excellent service. I’ve eaten at a handful of world-class restaurants, and we are right up there, albeit in a pretty casual atmosphere.
What’s crappy about it is old news; people who complain over nothing, are excessively needy, bad tippers, and the worst – rude, condescending fawkers.
But when I read Chet Suabo’s comment that “it requires the intelligence of a street sweeper or ’sandwich artist’,” I couldn’t keep my mouth shut.
Where to start? First off, being a good server in a nice restaurant is a hard job to get, my little restaurant regularly gets around 1000 applications for one job via a single craigslist ad.
It is also not for everyone. I would venture to say most people would not make very good servers. You have to be extremely personable. Sure, most guests are fine, some are really fun / sweet / interesting / sexy, but of course we also have to deal with some incredibly obnoxious people. It can be tough not to tell some folks outright that they’re being totally rude or stupid. If I feel someone isn’t treating me with basic human respect, I have little ways of embarrassing them or making them look like an ass. It’s funny, when someone is being rude, I just stand up to them, use some nice strong, “I will not take your attitude” non-verbal communication, and I’ll usually walk with a 20% tip. In life you always gotta stand up to bullies.
NEXT: Your memory must be exceptional – remembering every drink, appetizer, and dinner, as well as what goes to whom and who is on a different tab, for six people, followed by a discussion that leads to someone saying “oh wait, can i change mine to the Caeser salad,” after keeping everything else locked down in memory, and NOT MAKING AN ERROR, well – not everyone can do that.
You have to have some amount of grace – the ability to work very quickly and efficiently, to basically RUN around a restaurant while never looking hurried. You are constantly prioritizing and re-prioritizing when curveballs are thrown your way. Add a packed establishment with very little room to carry tons of food and drink, and now you have to be deft and assertive just to get where you need to be. Now add the people who are angry that they waited almost an hour for a table (after the hosts told them it was at least an hour wait), maybe you start to get the picture?
So assuming you can handle all of this, you now have to become a decent mind-reader; that is to say, even before approaching a table, I look at them and guess what kind of service they want – Calm, polite, informative? Bold, boisterous, party guy? Fast, efficient, leave them alone? Is it a date – should I try to make them both look good? Do they want to hear about me, talk about themselves? Should I be flirty? Are they foodies? Do they want a recipe?
There’s a million different ways people like to be treated when they eat out, and it’s my job to quickly find out what you and your party like and give it to you. That’s always been my main thing as a server – give the people what they want. Make sure they feel welcomed on the way in, happy while they’re there, and leave feeling great about the experience they just had. That means they’ll probably be back, and probably tip well.
Granted, not all restaurants can find staff that feel this way about service.
To the people who’ve had bad service:
If your server is rude, talk to the manager and complain, be proactive not reactive. In most restaurants (if the server isn’t in that job due to nepotism), the problem will quickly be remedied.
If that’s TOO proactive for you, leave a small note with your 10% tip letting them know why, since maybe they got dumped that day or just had all their money shifts given to the new girl with big boobs. That’s really no excuse for poor service, but people are human.
Bad service should not be rewarded, although even if a server is completely apathetic and unattentive (here in Portland it’s a “too cool for school” attitude that really gets me), I still leave 10% to cover what they probably have to give to someone else. People have bad nights. The only time I ever almost didn’t tip was when a bartender scolded me for not tipping enough while I was getting more money out of my wallet to finish the tip. I threw the $5 in her face and told her it was the last tip she’d ever see from me.
And about spitting in food – GROSS!
My final thought –
So you think the system of tipping for service is silly, OK, fine. I completely disagree, I tip anyone for good service when it’s customary, I think it gives them more of a reason to do a good job, and they deserve a little reward.
But the main thing here is that IT IS CUSTOMARY. SO CUSTOMARY THAT IRS AUDITORS MAY COME AFTER SOMEONE WHO CLAIMS LESS THAN 10% TIPS FROM THEIR SALES! SO CUSTOMARY THAT ALL U.S. RESTAURANTS PAY MINIMUM WAGE OR LESS TO JOBS THAT REQUIRE A LOT MORE SKILL THAT BEING THE BUN TOASTER AT MCDONALDS.
If you want to change the custom, that’s fine, write to congress, talk to your local chamber of commerce, write the state legislature, call a trade organization.
Otherwise you’re just holding it up as an excuse to be a greedy, self-centered, awful cheapskate.
I know they’re out there, I see them, and I will continue to take the good with the bad, but if just one person reads this and has a better understanding of waiting tables…
BTW – If you bad tippers are tired of getting bad service, find better restaurants! And if you want good food, avoid the cookie-cutter chain restaurants – local restaurants that serve local ingredients will ALWAYS have the potential to be much better!
ps – sorry bun toasters, i’ve been there!
Don’t buy their albums. Don’t go see their movies. Hit them where it hurts, in THEIR pocketbook. Britney Spears once came to Vegas (where I live), had an employee of a restaurant go get her a Starbucks, and not only didn’t tip, but did a ‘dine and dash’. Her agent said it “was a misunderstanding”, but no one here really believes it.
Everyone keeps talking about how greedy celebrities are and how terrible they are for not tipping or not tipping enough when nobody seems to talk about who the truly greedy people are. The head owners of these restaurants. There is simply no excuse for paying ANYONE $2.15 an hour, no matter how much you tip. And yes, waiters and waitresses do work hard and do deserve the money that they make from tips. But I as a customer should not have to help pay for their paycheck because the restaurant owners are too greedy to give them the proper pay that they deserve. Oh, and anyone who spits or puts anything from the human body into a customers food for ANY reason does NOT deserve a tip of any size and should be fired immediately with no excuses and no exceptions.
I wouldn’t really have a problem with the “you get what you deserve” approach to tipping, except that in my experience, the people who typically complain about restaurant service don’t know anything about it — most diners seem to blame the waiter for just about anything that can go wrong during a meal. If your server is overtly rude or obnoxious, then of course that person does not deserve a generous tip, but a lot of people get annoyed if the server doesn’t immediately appear the second they need a refill, or if the food doesn’t come out promptly, and so forth. It could be the kitchen, you know, or they could be understaffed. But the first response out of people’s mouths is always, “The service sucks.”
Moreover, a lot of people compensate for a bad restaurant experience by leaving a bad tip, no matter whose fault it is. This unfairly punishes the server. Why is it the server’s fault if your steak was undercooked?
And as for the higher cost of wine and all that, I am nowhere NEAR the millionaire that these people are, and I occasionally also enjoy $100-200 meals, and I ALWAYS leave the standard 20%.
The stuff on this web site is really witty and cool wise
To the cheap ass, idiots that don’t understand why servers only make $2.13 an hour- it’s simple. The stuffed flounder you order now at $18.99 would go up to about $29.99 if servers were to be paid a decent wage. How long do you think that restaurant would stay in business? If you don’t have the money to tip than stay at home. It’s rude and disgusting behavior especially for people with money- shameful.
I hate the whole idea that the rich owe you. what pathetic extortion. A fifth of the bill is so ridiculous to just expect as a tip, anyway.
One thing i have noticed about some of these celebrities
that tip so poorly and are rude most of them are very liberal
and political acting like they are for the party of the poor
yet they are the ones that tip so little in public…Sean Penn
Jessie Jackson..Bill Cosby..Micheal Moore just to name a few..
that have been known to leave almost nothing kind of hypocritical one would think..I know the rich dont owe people
anything Francesca but these people preach their opinions
to average people but yet dont live the way they portray to..
I dont think anyone here is saying to leave a tip if you get
bad service of course why would you tip bad service. I know
many people that have given great service busted their back
for people and didn’t get a dime thats what i am talking about..
I have witnessed that from friends/ family that have worked in the food buisness..I guess people that think opposite here have
proubly never had to work in food service so they dont know..
BAD TIPPERS SHOULD GO STRAIGHT TO HELL.
We make NO money per hour, I’m a college student barely scraping by, and the pathetic 2 an hour that I get goes STRAIGHT to taxes. I might get a paycheck with 3 dollars on it. We deserve, rely, and NEED our 15% at LEAST!
Unfortunately, in our line of work, we have to take the good with the bad. Sometimes, you get the greatful people who understand that in the service and hospitality industry, we LIVE off of our tips. They understand that if it wasn’t for us, they would be driiving/serving themselves everywhere they go. Then you get the pathetic people that think that we need “real jobs” but if we don’t serve on them hand and foot, and give them everything on a silver platter, they complain and throw a tantrum like a 2-year old. These are the type of people that no matter what you do for them, they will never be happy. They think they are a god and don’t deserve what they have.
and defnitely not all rich people are snobbs and cheap. I drove a wealthy guy and his wife from a hotel to an airport, which is about 20 miles away and he gave me a 50 dollar tip. He was a nice and friendly guy too. So as I said. In the service industry, you have to take the good and the bad.
I heard a story from a friend in New York about Streisand. She lived in an apartment building next to a restaurant. She was having some friends over and called the restaurant to order some food. They were closing but decided to oblige her and had a waiter bring some food up to her apartment. She tipped the guy $50 in front of the guests. After the guests left she called the restaurant and asked for the waiter who brought up the food. They said he’d gone home. She wanted the $50 back. So all those stories about her being cheap … true.
Here’s an idea – do what we used to do when the “big players” used to try and come into our restaurant after several other places and accounts had reported that they refuse to tip at all (even crossing out the added gratuity for large parties right off the bill, taking up the entire dining room, and not tipping eeh staff who worked only for them all night long).
REFUSE TO SERVE THEM.
The “superstar” execs from the big company that constantly did this to servers found that they no longer had a place to throw lavish dinner parties because every restaurant in town black balled them. And they were quite vocal about why.
I don’t care who you are…but if you don’t want to pay for service, then you won’t get service.
PDXFOODDUDE has the most sensible take on the subject..and I pretty much agree with everything he had to say…As a server I am proud to say that I believe that I am an above average server 95% of the time yes I can occasionally “Get in the Weeds” and my service is not what I would like it to be and I understand when my tip might not be as high as normally expected..I take it like a woman and go on..But when I am on game and give excellent service and receive $4 on a $100 yes I turn into one of those whinny complainers that some of you like to vent about…But let me throw this out If you go to lets say, your auto mechanic and get a new set of tires and you decide that they were too slow at putting them on and getting you back on the road or maybe you go to the family doctor and decide your wait is too slow and you decide that you are just going to pay these professionals just 10% or so of their bills because you think thats all they deserve…hmmm well that just wouldnt go over at all would it?!!So why do people think it is acceptable to do that to their servers IF they provide you with the excellent you are expecting???….As for the celebrities that is not the majority of clientel at most establishments so its really not of importance to most of us servers…To all my fellow servers remember the good does come with the bad and to keep your head up because that next table will probaly make up for that demanding 10 top that tipped you 5% on a 300 dollar bill!!!
Ah be a black niggah an’ I never be tippin’ the white man be cuz be keepin’ me down
